Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a move for the United States International midfielder Johnny Cardoso in recent months.
The Premier League club has an option to sign the player for a fee of around €25 million at the end of the season. They secured a first refusal on the player when they sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis. According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham are now looking to trigger the clause in the midfielder’s contract and want him to join in the summer.
The report claims that Tottenham have scouted him multiple times this season, and they believe that he could be an important player for them. The midfielder has been praised for his performances in La Liga.
Former USMNT star Charlie Davies said via GOAL: “[He’s] 23 years old, killing it at Real Betis. I think he’s really found a good role within this team. He’s not the most aggressive ball-winner, but what he does do is he picks up second balls, he finds the right space, and he’s able to play forward. He’s always looking to play forwards and not backwards or play in that safe pass, so I really like his growth as he continues to get playing time in La Liga.”
Tottenham need midfield depth
They need more depth and quality in the midfield, and the 23-year-old could be the ideal acquisition. He will add defensive steel and physicality to the Tottenham midfield. Furthermore, his composure and progressive passing would add a new dimension to the side.
The United States International could prove to be an upgrade on Yves Bissouma. The Spurs player has been underwhelming this season, and they need to find an alternative.
The North London outfit have been linked with players like Morten Frendrup. It is evident that they are keen on signing a quality midfielder.
Johnny Cardoso could prove to be a bargain
The fact that they have an agreement in place with Real Betis for the United States international will certainly be a major boost. Cardoso is certainly worth a lot more than €25 million, and the transfer could look like a bargain.
However, the deal might not be as easy as it sounds. Tottenham will have to convince the player of their ambitions. If the midfielder is not keen on a move, the agreement with the Spanish club would mean nothing.
