Tottenham may offload South American ace reckons pundit

By Bruce Grove -

Noel Whelan has tipped Tottenham to sell Erik Lamela soon if he isn’t in the plans of Jose Mourinho.

The 28-year-old is one of the oldest members of the current Tottenham team and he has remained reliable.

He is one of the players that Mourinho can trust to come off the bench and make an impact.

He looks set to spend more time in the North London side, however, Whelan is of the opinion that he should be starting games and if he isn’t as important as that, then this is probably the best time for Tottenham to cash in on him.

He claimed that the Argentinean will get into any other team and he is useful for Spurs, but if the club wants to keep him, they have to tie him down to a new deal else, they need to sell him now to make some money from his sale.

He told Football Insider: “He’s been at Tottenham a hell of a long time now, Erik Lamela, and he’s always been one of these players that is a go-to from the bench.

“He’s had short spells when he’s been a starter in the side, more so with Mauricio Pochettino.

“Now he’s the sort of player that, on his day, can be a world beater. He can score great goals, he’s fantastic with the ball on the deck, great pace, good eye for a pass.

“It’s a catch 22 situation. If he’s desperately needed by Jose Mourinho, then they should think about getting a new contract on the table for him. If he’s not in Jose Mourinho’s plans and they feel they want a fresher person in that position, then you do have to cash in. It’s as simple as that.

“Lamela has still got a lot to offer a football team and could get regular game time so you’ll get more money from him now then in another year’s time.

“If you want to get some money for him the best way would be to cash in at the end of the season.”

Lamela gives 100% every game might be a bit over the top sometimes if he could infect the team with the same enthusiasm he has we will be champions.

More drivel, from another ‘rent a mouth’ ex-pro, in this case Noel Whelan, who believes he knows the inner workings of the club more intimately than the manager.

The truth is, Lamela is a favourite of Mourinho, he is committed to the club and has a valuable role within the squad. He is not going anywhere.

No denying his work ethic but high expectations of repeatedly written off Lamela (dubbed the next Messi) have never been fulfilled!! C’est la vie.
