Tottenham looking to beat the likes of Liverpool to young Turkish international

By Bruce Grove -

It is being reported that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is keen on Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to Turkish media outlet Fotomac as cited by SportWitness.

Apparently, Mourinho is looking to sign another keeper and Cakir is one of three that the Portuguese manager has identified along with Ajax’s Andre Onana and Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha.

Out of the three shot-stoppers, the same report reckons that Cakir is at the top of Mourinho’s list simply because he would be cheaper than Onana or Strakosha.

There no indication that Cakir is being targeted as an immediate Hugo Lloris replacement but you have to think that is the medium-term intention with the French world cup winner fast approaching the end of his career at the top level.

Sportwitness is also claiming that Liverpool, Leicester City and Chelsea are interested in the 24-year-old who still has over three years left on his contract with Trabzonspor.

90mins did a piece on Cakir, who has represented Turkey twice, analysing his strengths and weaknesses and their conclusion was that he has very few weaknesses. They further state that he is an excellent shot-stopper and great in the air.

The few weaknesses that they did identify was his passing out from the back and kicking accuracy but considering his young age in goalkeeping terms he has more than enough time to improve on his weaker attributes.

No fee has been mentioned, however, Transfermarkt values him at roughly £9 million, a figure Tottenham should be able to afford even with the financial impact that will no doubt hit the club once we get through the pandemic.

I can’t see Chelsea signing a number one keeper with Kepa on a massive contract with years to run more likely Ben Foster to replace Caballero.

Very few weaknesses, his biggest weakness is that he’d cost money. Levy will get another five years out of Hugo.
