Jan Vertonghen replacement identified – Chelsea and Man Utd also in the mix

By Bruce Grove -

It is being reported by the Italian media that Tottenham has identified the ideal replacement for soon to be free agent Jan Vertonghen.

Gazette dello Sport via Football London is claiming that Verona’s Marash Kumbulla is the player that Spurs are looking at to fill the void that the departure of Vertonghen will create.

I have to be totally honest and admit that I have no idea who this player is, any info I have on him has been derived from Wikipedia and Youtube and we all know how unreliable those sources are in terms of a true picture of a players ability.

The same report names Everton as another club interested in the 20-year-old who was born in Italy of Albanian parents. I have also seen reports of Man Utd and Chelsea being linked with the young defender but no idea how accurate that is.

One thing that is positive is his age, he is 13 years younger than the 33-year-old Vertonghen and if Jose Mourinho thinks he is good enough for us then we would be signing a player that could have a good decade or more ahead of him at the top level.

This is one where we will have to trust the club and their scouting and analysis of the player’s attributes. If the rumours are true of course.

Tottenham is going to need to freshen up the defence, however, I would personally have prefered that we went with a more experienced defender proven in the Premier League that could hit the ground running.

The same report is touting a fee of £26 million, which does seem a little high for a player that has just 12 games under his belt in Serie A, though he has already broken into the Albanian nation side.

Money will no doubt dictate the sort of player that Spurs can sign, there could quite easily be a very limited budget and it may be the case that proven Premier League players are simply not an economic option.

This is one worth keeping an eye on.

Tottenham have scouts, you say. What do they need scouts for?

The only eye worth keeping on this is a glass one. The 8th ‘richest’ club swilling around a bargain bucket for players not even on Google!
