Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months.

Chelsea and Tottenham are keen on signing 23-year-old Ecuador International, and they will have to pay a fee of around €70 million as per SportBILD (h/t SportWitness).

The defender has a long-term contract with Leverkusen until 2029 and they are under no pressure to sell him. Tottenham and Chelsea will have to pay the asking price to get the deal done.

Tottenham are in desperate need of a quality central defender and Hincapie would be a long-term acquisition for them. He is capable of operating as a central defender as well as a left-back. His versatility will be a bonus.

The defender is highly rated in Europe and South America. He helped Leverkusen win the league title last season.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes described him as a player with a “very promising future” a few years ago. He is quite young and he will only get better with coaching and experience. He could develop into a top-class performer for Tottenham. Regular football in England could accelerate his development as well.

It remains to be seen where he ends up.

Players like Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have had their fair share of injury problems and Tottenham have struggled in their absence. They need more depth at the back, and Hincapie would be an excellent acquisition for them.

However, the asking price could complicate matters. Tottenham need to improve the other areas of their squad as well and splashing €70 million on the Ecuador International might prove to be difficult. It will be interesting to see if they can beat Chelsea to his signature. The Blues need defensive enforcement as well, especially with players like Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile facing uncertain futures at the club.
