Italian manager Antonio Conte was appointed as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur back in 2021 and he left the club in 2023 after falling out with the club hierarchy and the players.

Former Tottenham star and club legend Hugo Lloris has now explained how the situation transpired under the Italian manager, and why things got complicated for him at the club.

The French international goalkeeper has revealed that the Italian was a sincere and honest manager, but he struggled to cope with poor results. His tendency to erupt when results did not go his way resulted in him losing the dressing room eventually.

Lloris revealed to Guardian: “I found Antonio Conte to be quite a character, driven by victory, which gave him energy, but he found it very hard to control his frustration when we started drawing, let alone losing, because his inner torment had to get out; and if he was tormented, then everyone had to share that torment too, and things could get very complicated very fast.

“In training, he oversaw everything, organising tactical sessions with 10 outfield players against one goalie; but it was hard for the creative players to find their places in his restrictive game-play. The rigidity of the structure and set sequences did us a lot of good at first but, after a few months, teams learned how to play against us and it became tougher to win.

“During matches, Conte was as extreme and eruptive as he appeared, garnering respect and fear.”

Conte was regarded as one of the best managers in the world when he arrived at Tottenham and the North London club started impressively under him. They secured Champions League qualification for the first time since 2019 under his management. They were expected to win trophies under his guidance.

He was a proven winner when he arrived at Tottenham and he had won the Premier League title with Chelsea.

However, things started to deteriorate and Conte ended up blaming the players for their lack of dedication and their selfishness on the pitch. Eventually, he left the club and ended up joining Napoli as their manager in June 2024.
