Tottenham finds itself in a three-way bidding war for Sassuolo defender

By Eddie Razo -

The Tottenham Hotspur backline will see some reinforcing this summer as the English club has reportedly expressed interest in a Serie A defender.  There’s interest in Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu to improve the central defense, but Tottenham is also looking at the full-backs.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham finds itself in a three-way battle to sign U.S. Sassuolo Calcio right-back Mert Müldür. The report also states that West Ham United thinks highly of the Turkey international. Arsenal is another club that is monitoring the young defender, per The Athletic.

Serge Aurier has one year left on his contract; regardless if Tottenham sells the 28-year-old this summer or lets him walk next year, they’ll need a replacement, and Müldür is a candidate to fill that role long-term.

Newly appointed Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici and manager Nuno Espírito Santo are putting together their transfer plans, which would include the pursuit of Sassuolo right-back.

The 22-year-old is under contract until 2024 and has a transfer value of €9-million per Transfermarkt. However, when three Premier League sides all find themselves in a possible bidding war for a player, the price will likely go up on Müldür.

Müldür has made 54 appearances for Sassuolo since joining the Italian club in 2019, where he’s scored two goals and registered four assists.

We don’t battle clubs for players. That drives up the price which is no go for the boss.
