Tottenham Hotspur are looking to improve their defensive unit at the end of the season, and they have identified Piero Hincapie as a target.

The 23-year-old has done quite well for the German outfit Bayer Leverkusen, helping them win the league title last season. According to SPORT, Tottenham have ‘expressed interest’ in signing the South American defender, and they will face competition from Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Hincapie has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga in the past as well. It will be interesting to see if he can secure a move to the Premier League this summer.

The 23-year-old is a reliable central defender, and he is versatile enough to operate as a full-back as well. He could be the ideal utility man for Tottenham if they can get the deal done. The player has a release clause of around €50 million (£42m), and Tottenham certainly have the resources to get the deal done.

They need to add more depth to the defensive unit, especially if Cristian Romero leaves the club in the summer. Hincapie could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for them. He is still young, and he will improve further with coaching and experience. He could develop into a key player for the club.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are interested in the player as well. They need to add more depth to the defensive unit, and the 23-year-old could be the ideal acquisition. They have the financial resources to pay his release clause, and the opportunity to play for Real Madrid can be quite attractive for any player.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can convince the player to turn down a move to the Spanish capital and join them instead.
