Tottenham Enquire About Defender Complications Could Put Levy Off | Opinion

By Joe Fish -

Tottenham have made contact with Barcelona about the availability of Emerson in our pursuit of a new right-back, according to reports in Spain.

Any right-footed defender with two legs and a pulse has been linked to Spurs of late due to the desperate need to find an upgrade on Serge Aurier.

Emerson only moved to the Camp Nou from Brazilian side Atletico-MG last summer but was immediately shipped out on loan to Real Betis where his performances across 23 games have caught our eye, claims Dario de Sevilla.

The 21-year-old has three goals and five assists this season so is naturally attack-minded and would suit the advanced role that Aurier has fulfilled under Jose Mourinho, with a return of two goals and seven assists.

However, Dario de Sevilla, a newspaper local to Betis, understands that they have the first refusal to buy Emerson permanently, and that Barcelona would have to pay a fee to their La Liga rivals to open up the market for Spurs and other suitors. So this might be a complicated deal to get done.

A lot will depend on the financial agreements already in place between Barca and Betis and whether Daniel Levy would be able – and prepared – to trump those numbers.

In which case I think we’d be better off focussing on one of our other 157 reported right-back targets.
