Tottenham are being underestimated and that is a good thing

By Bruce Grove -

Before last season kicked off most pundits and fair-minded fans were predicting that Tottenham would finish third, they were seen as the nearest challengers to Man City and Liverpool.

Fast forward 12 months and despite the squad actually being strengthened and with a world-class manager at the helm they are now viewed as a team that will struggle to make the top six, nevermind top-four.

Obviously, there is justification for that, the results were terrible for large portions of the season, elimination from the Champions League and FA Cup was done with a whimper and the football was horrendous to watch, even with a full-strength team.

However, the assumption that Spurs are a club in crisis or will struggle from the get-go next season is just too simplistic for me.

I could go on and explain why I believe that but it would take thousands of words and even then I know it will bring about much opposition, especially from my fellow Spurs fans.

What I will say is that I do not feel Jose Mourinho is past it, that he will get the team he wants and that they will respond positively to his instructions and that with a few solid signings in key areas (right-back, left-back, central defence, back up striker) and the more recent signings (Lo Celso, Ndombele, Bergwijn, Gedson, Hojbjerg) coming good that we will see a very different Tottenham next season.

Now, because of the negativity surrounding the club, Mourinho and the players, I feel that it has given me a great opportunity to take advantage.

It is that time of year for me to look at the odds on Tottenham achieving various targets next season and there is two bets that I will be going in heavy on before the season kicks off.

The first one is for the lads to finish top-four, I am convinced they will and the 4.33 available in some places is massive to me and I will put my neck on the line right here right now and state clearly that is a banker bet for me.

The second one is to win the Europa League, however, that depends on the price when that market is formulated, though I may instead go with to win a trophy instead.

So there you go, I have nailed my opinion to the mast and accept that I am now here to be shot at but I don’t care, I genuinely do feel that we will finish top-four next season and will back that up with some cold hard cash.

As the headline states, Tottenham are being underestimated and that is a good thing, otherwise, I would not be able to land such good odds.

Aye the ropey is a good tournament to win. Also the winner goes straight into champs league.. But it’s tough to win there are loads of games and later in the week which is less time to recover for prem games.. Also CL teams drop down into it so in the ko stages the quality suddenly shoots up…. To win that and finish top four then we need a bigger squad to cope. One striker, one right back, one left back, no way can we cope at the minute. No strength in depth whatsoever.

Ndombele is a waste of time.. We make our own luck. Last time the year ended in 1 everyone was saying that. Ten years ago now. We won nothing mate. So if we win nothing in 2021 then we will have to wait another ten years to be ‘lucky’ again….. Luck and superstition is nonsense mate we can’t be relying on that.. We need to sign some quality players and rid of our rubbish..

Our squad hasn’t been strengthened since paul mitch was sacked.. When first team starters leave, if they are replaced at all then they have been replaced with benchwarmers….

To say Jose got more points is to ignore the very large break in the season that allowed players to return to fitness, and kill the momentum of some around us.

Personally though, and I am in a small group i think, at this point I am more concerned with the fact I can’t bring myself to watch this team play the “Jose way” it’s dull and horrible. We may get top 4, may even win a cup (I don’t think either will happen without significant investment, we still at least 3 positions short) but I will not feel part of the achievement if I can’t watch it as it’s simply too boring. I really hope I am wrong on all counts, let’s see.

Bruce grove. You know them toilets in Bruce grove, the 1920 grade 2 listed ones? I worked on the Restoration of all the iron work a few years back with a little metal fabrication firm (metalcraft) in tottenham that specialises in gates&railings heritage stuff. They came up lovely. We even leaded them back in. Top top work. 🌚 still empty though. They don’t know what to do with them.

Too simplistic to state that we will get top 4 because we got more points when Mourinho took over. Barnsley had a remarkable escape to stay in the Championship and were amongst the top 8 teams in that league. Not one Barnsley fan would wager a push for the play offs. Spurs are 5th/6th material unless we sign a bit of quality. PEH is a start but that one signing will not get us to 4th. We lack quality and depth (in certain areas) something top 4 teams do not tend to suffer from.

Injuries to any of our best players, various positions
where we are weak, in a compressed season and with the slog of the Europa League the bench and its depth. Apart from that if the team get with the Mourinho program we are in with a shout of getting back into the Champions League. Trophies, who knows?

I kind if agree, if we can get the best out of N’dembele and keep kane and son fit. Top4 i think at least but seriously want a trophy. remember its lucky for spurs when the year ends in 1

Maybe he was being realistic having assessed what he inherited.Things should be different this season if he can get his own choice of players in and have a full pre-season (what there is of it).Let’s hope so.

Jan Vertongen at his prime , was possibly the best CB in the league but yet he won nothing . It’s a sad way to end his career with us . I used to be a Levy supporter . Not anymore .

Yes , I would not trade Kane or Son for anyone . The issue here is not just about what players we have . It’s we are competing in any kind of financial reality with the lines of Chelsea . Kane and Son are top top players and had been with us for 5 years but they win nothing as yet . Why ? The rest are improving their squads all the time

I wouldn’t swap Kane & Son for Werner & Ziyech,Mourinho took over Spurs in 14th but still got more points per game than Chelsea and Frank.

I honestly can’t see how we can be in the top 4. We are miles off Liverpool and Citeh.

Man U has a mammoth budget and looking at transfer we can only dream of. On current squad strength they are already better than us .

Chelsea already added players we can only dream of . Ziyech, Weiner and possibly Harvetz.

His remit is to emulate poch in getting CL money, nothing more. It’s why he started Vorm and Skipp in the fa cup defeat to Norwich.

I view it as we got 4th most points in league during joses few months (i tink) so if we improve then we are in a good position pierre fixes on of our main problems if we get a rb then I’d bank on it

I never make predictions or have expectations with Spurs, time teaches you not to expect too much, but I think it’s a huge season coming up, Mourinho will want to be aiming at trophies , ALL of them . I dont believe he has the mental capacity to let any game in any competition be given away, in the manner they have been sacrificed the last few years. Yes he wants top four and the EL, but I think he will strive for the domestics too, and that is where his mentality will be in changing the players attitudes. By being focused on trying to win trophies , not just being in the cups like before, and I hope he succeeds…..please !

I’d be happy with a 4th or even 5th if we won the Ropey, that’s derided by many but still a big, big tournament to win.

I think we’re perceived as a top 6 side still, but there are new teams in the mix as well as the old

Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea are the big guns currently – esp with their new spending
Ar**nil will again flatter to deceive as will Leicester.
But Wolves are worth keeping a close eye on, as are Leeds – who I expect will be mid table at best despite a rowdy supporter base, who won’t be able to help the team from their armchairs
Sheff Utd will threaten and fade again I hope. Aside from that who is there
If we’re not 4th or 5th from there then we are banjaxed
