Tottenham Hotspur were denied a return to winning ways in the Europa League thanks to a last-minute equaliser from Roma centre-back Mats Hummels.
The Lilywhites saw their perfect record ended away at Galatasaray in their last European match but looked to have put that right here thanks to a Son Heung-min penalty and a strike from Brennan Johnson.
But Thursday’s match wasn’t without difficulties for Spurs, who were pegged back by an Evan N’Dicka equaliser in the first half, while Roma saw three goals disallowed due to offside.
The Italians finally found another breakthrough right at the end with veteran defender Hummels popping up at the back post to make it 2-2.
The result means Spurs drop out of the Europa League top eight, but with 10 points on the board, should still comfortably make the knockout rounds.
Here are full Spurs player ratings from the match:
Tottenham player ratings vs Roma: Mats Hummels steals point
Fraser Forster – 8/10 – A couple of questionable bits of decision-making but made up for it with some important and impressive saves. Will be frustrated by the defending on the late equaliser, which came just moments after a stunning reflex stop.
Pedro Porro – 7/10 – Was a powerhouse going forward and unlucky to see a second-half free-kick hit the crossbar. Made six tackles, four clearances and six recoveries. Got very lucky not to give away a goal in the final few minutes trying to head the ball back to Forster.
Radu Dragusin – 6/10 – An improved performance given his recent shaky form but still doesn’t feel like he can lead a defence.
Ben Davies – 7/10 – Used the ball well and was solid defensively for the most part.
Archie Gray – 7/10 – Not Gray’s most active game but delivered a few dangerous balls into the box, was tidy with the ball and did what he needed to at the back.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 7/10 – Only misplaced two passes all game and always looked to get Spurs moving forward quickly. Booked for a robust challenge on Alexis Saelemaekers and was perhaps quite lucky not to see VAR review the incident for a red card.
Pape Sarr – 8/10 – Beat Hummels to the ball to win a penalty in the opening stages. Made numerous charging runs forward with the ball and was on hand to break up several Roma attacks.
Dejan Kulusevski – 9/10 – Provided the assist for Johnson with a great low cross and was unlucky not to get a goal of his own, rattling the post. Was a constant thorn in Roma’s side with his dribbling and directness, even if his decision-making was off a couple of times.
Brennan Johnson – 8/10 – Another goal in what continues to be a breakthrough campaign for Johnson, who was perhaps unlucky not to get a couple more.
Dominic Solanke – 5/10 – Lost all six of his aerial duels and won only three of 13 ground duels. Still battled hard and looked desperate to get on the scoresheet, which ended up being to the detriment of his performance.
Son Heung-min – 8/10 – Sent Svilar the wrong way with his early penalty to get things going. Kept Roma’s defence on its toes with his runs and pressing without the ball.
Substitutes:
James Maddison (68′, for Johnson) – 5/10 – Tried to make things happen in the final third but failed to stop the cross for Hummels’ goal.
Yves Bissouma (69′, for Sarr) – 6/10 – Tidy with the ball and quick to close Roma down without it.
Timo Werner (78′, for Son) – 5/10 – Was a threat with his pace but just didn’t see enough of the ball.
Lucas Bergvall (78′, for Bentancur) – 6/10 – Made a few clearances and defensive interventions but didn’t have enough time to do anything meaningful with the ball.
