‘Tore into his players…’ – Report details how Conte punished his team after the ‘sluggish’ defeat to Sporting

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to the Daily Mail, Antonio Conte ordered his Tottenham players to report for training at 11 a.m. on Wednesday as a possible punishment for their poor performance against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday night.

Tottenham looked sluggish and leggy despite not playing over the weekend as they conceded twice in the final few minutes in what was their first defeat of the season.

The Spurs manager watched his team lose 2-0 in the Portuguese capital. Conte is also said to have ‘tore into his players’ in the dressing room after the game.

And according to the report, Conte ‘ordered’ his players to report to Hotspur Way for training at 11 a.m. ‘Conte had not informed the players of their training schedule’, but revealed that they would begin earlier than expected after the game.

Conte’s decision will serve as a reminder to Spurs players of his expectations of the team and the standard he expects. And the standards are pretty high considering Spurs have picked up 14 points from a possible 18 in the league, and beaten Marseille in their first Champions League game. The fact that Conte has taken their first defeat so seriously only goes on to show the serial winner that he is and expects his team to be.

Conte will now be expecting a response when Spurs host a struggling Leicester side on Saturday evening.

A small child with a bag over its head could tell you that these are two extremely different players.

So your question doesn’t have much worth.

It’s a good job we’re all 15 years old, then ☺️ No pressure, Daniel!

Prior to this defeat this manager was touted as the coming messiah with “the winning mentality” , who would not take anybody who was not contributing .
His team [ with only one defeat so far ] has hit a sticky patch .
I know that he will work it out just like he has for the last 10 months . Nothing has been unseen by him , if WE can analyse the faults I’m sure he can – AND HE WILL .
When he says 3 windows , I am convinced he’s right , we just have to retain as much form as we can for him to decide where the progression is needed .
We are not the the only club to have made dodgy signings [ in the last 6 weeks its been Don Paratici , the Director supreme ] , we wont be the last , but for God’s sake one swallow [ or one defeat ] does not a summer destroy ……………………. C O Y S !!

Agree, players must own their shortcomings instead of blaming managers. These Spurs players are coddled entirely too much.

Would love to see Kulusevski just behind Kane and Son.

Given that we’re not winning trophies under ENIC as you say then it has to be entertainment. Thinking back to last week against Marseilles our crowd were stunned into silence in the first half by the paucity of our play. That can’t be acceptable.

Results matter. Or do they?

Ask yourselves – why do you support Spurs? To see them lift trophies? Haha, this is the wrong team for that, at least under ENIC’s watch.

Probably, like me, it’s because you’re a fan of entertaining football. Attacking style and creativity. This is not what we’re getting here under Conte. Sure he has us in the CL (for now at least), but what’s the point of going to the dance without having any dancing shoes on? Or the ability to dance at all?

Conte needs to shake it up big time and be more flexible and less stubborn. Probably neither of those will happen though.

I do get the feeling that Conte is a particularly slow and methodical coach and I don’t think he’s made his ‘final judgement’ on the signings who haven’t featured much yet (well, Bissouma and Spence really) – it took him a couple of months to realise what he liked fro the squad last season…he still likes those same players, to get the depth he’s slowly (slowly slowly slowly) doing the same process as last season with the new signings.

He’s not a risk taker, this is becoming clear. Whether this is a fault f his or a benefit we’ll see as the season pans out.

Is anyone seriously suggesting Royal is better than Spence?

Conte is fairly conservative (small c) in his team selections. It’s really time he does rotate a bit… but I can’t see him starting with Spence AND Bissouma. It’d definitely be a good experiment against a weak team.. but I reckon he’ll just bring in Bissouma OR Doherty as starters (I don’t think he fancies Spence… and will probably only start him against sub-Premiership level opponents)

It’s been said before but bears repeating- this is why our Captain should be an outfield player and not a keeper.

We are not using our subs because as H states the quality is not there. Spence was clearly a Levy punt once again. Conte did not want him and had openly stated he was purchased BY THE CLUB for the future. Conte wants players for the now and the simple truth is we failed dismally yet again to bring in the quality needed. The NLD with Arsenal coming soon will show us exactly how much progress we have made since last season and how much they have made. Our squad has the depth for only one EPL match per week and not to play in four completions and certainly not to compete meaningfully in the CL.

…also, play Kula more centrally behind the front two – he can pick a pass as he has vision and good technique. Let Spence and Perisic own the flanks and provide width.

Hopefully we will get the chance to see Spence, Lenglet and Bissouma this weekend. And a starting berth for Kulesevski.

Lloris
Romero Dier Lenglet
Spence Bissouma Bentancur Perisic
Kulesevski
Kane Son

I think Son will break his duck against Leicester.

I would like to see Skipp come on at some stage also.

Whilst there were some decent signings we are still shopping at Poundland in most cases where our competitors are going to Harrods. Pretty much our transfer philosophy for the last 23 years.

The slow starts are almost ingrained by now, they plagued Poch too.

If they didn’t play at the weekend then it is unlikely to be a physical problem so it is an attitude problem, part of a mentality that has seen Spurs win nothing.

The players themselves have to own displays like this and not accept it. Don’t talk about it ala Hugo, go out in the next game and show that you mean business.

Reference your video above H I think the two things you could take from the match were that their subs made all the difference and our vaunted world class stars never turned up,not for the first time.

I just find it strange that the players seem unable to get up for the CLThe fact that Conte, for whatever reason, will not change his tactics will win us nothing and both him and Kane will probably walk in the summer. This is the reality of ENIC’s stewardship of our club.

The simple fact is we aren’t the team Conte wants yet. That’s not really a surprise when you think of the kind of club we’ve been for a very long time. Conte is trying to achieve a culture change and that takes time.
