“top priority for Tottenham” – Romano claims Spurs have shifted focus from Kane’s contract to a more pressing matter

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham’s priority has shifted from Harry Kane’s contract and they are now focused on resolving the Antonio Conte issue.

Conte surprised everyone with his public attack on Tottenham players after the draw against Southampton on Saturday.

He accused his players of being selfish and mentally weak who are unable to take pressure.

He said:

“The problem is we have shown we are not a team.”

“We are 11 players. I see selfish players. I see players that don’t want to help each other, don’t play with heart.”

“It is the same every season, no matter who the manager is.”

“They’re used to it here. Don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure. They don’t want to play under stress.”

He also took a jibe at the Tottenham owners and their lack of ambition saying, “Tottenham’s story is this. 20 years there is the owner and they never won something. Why?”

His outburst seems to have caused quite a bit of anger among the players, and many of them reportedly would like to see him gone immediately.

Daniel Levy is said to be weighing up options about whether to sack Conte or not.

And now Fabrizio Romano has claimed that after the drama on Saturday, Tottenham’s focus has shifted from sorting out Harry Kane’s contract to handling the Conte situation.

In his latest column for Caughtoffside, he claimed that “Harry Kane talks may have to wait”.

He wrote:

“Resolving the Antonio Conte situation and making a decision on the manager’s future is now the top priority for Tottenham. Harry Kane talks may have to wait, and will take place in the next months. Tottenham will try to keep him as we mentioned but it’s now time to wait for the new coach and more decisions.”

Romano also squashed the rumours of Real Madrid’s interest in the England captain and stated that there is” nothing concrete” regarding Kane with Spurs still hoping to tie him to a new contract.

He added:

“Despite rumours, I’m not aware of talks with Real Madrid over Kane. We’re bound to see him linked with a lot of top clubs in the coming weeks and months because he’s a great player, but there’s nothing concrete now and Tottenham will try to tie him down to a new contract.”

It is a messy situation at the club right now. Kane’s decision on his future will certainly be dependent on who the next manager will be.

It will be interesting to see whether Levy sacks Conte now or let’s him see out his contract, bringing in a new manager in the summer.
