“They missed a trick” Robinson Rues One Spurs Deal That Never Happened In January

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that his old club should have swooped for Olivier Giroud in January.

Injuries have been a real issue for Jose Mourinho in recent weeks, with Steven Bergwijn joining the likes of Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son on the sidelines.

While the Premier League is now on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak, it could allow key players to return for the rescheduled fixtures.

However, Robinson believes that Spurs should have brought in Giroud in January and has referenced the difficult the club faces in trying to find a striker willing to compete but sit behind Harry Kane in the pecking order when he’s fit.

“Spurs tried to get a number nine in the January window,” he told Football Insider, as re-reported by the Metro. “With Harry Kane’s injury, closely followed by Son’s injury and now Bergwijn they have not got anyone who is comfortable playing that position.

“To not get a striker in January has proven very important. I think it was a real miss not getting Olivier Giroud in January.

“It is a difficult sell for Spurs, getting a top striker to play while Kane is out. I really think they missed a trick not signing somebody.”

While trying to contend with those key absences, Mourinho saw his side crash out of the FA Cup and Champions League prior to the league stepping in and calling a halt to proceedings.

Their official statement noted that normal service will resume in April, albeit depending on the coronavirus situation, and so Spurs will wait to see who is available when the new fixture schedule is confirmed.

While a move for Giroud didn’t materialise in January, despite the Sun reporting it was close, it remains to be seen if Tottenham try this summer when his contract expires or if they look elsewhere for a solution in that department.
