Ben Davies was named Tottenham Hotspur captain for their Premier League match against Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.
Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris is a long-term absentee with a dislocated elbow while usual stand-ins Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen also missed the trip to Merseyside.
This left Mauricio Pochettino with a decision to make, and the Argentine made the somewhat surprising call to put the armband on Davies.
Davies has been at Spurs for over five seasons, making 174 appearances for the club, so is a senior player in least in terms of longevity.
But the Wales international has recently found himself second-choice left-back to Danny Rose, with the start at Everton only his second in the league this season and afford to him because of Rose’s suspension.
Some Spurs fans on Twitter were baffled by the decision to give Davies the captaincy ahead of the likes of Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld, feeling that it epitomises the current position of the club.
Sad state of offairs having Ben Davies as the captain and the one players should look up to, this club is rotten to the core

Davies is a steady hand and a fine professional but it is a strange decision from Pochettino. Although, he has been making a lot of those lately.
