The Tottenham attack – who to sell or keep, an opinion

By Bruce Grove -

I have already gone through the Tottenham defence (here) and the Tottenham midfield (here) and the time is right to have a look at the Tottenham attack and who the club should keep hold of and who they should sell.

To some extent, the attack is probably the easiest area of the squad to define and I suspect that my opinion will be widely shared, well, that is the hope anyway.

Harry Kane – keep

Not exactly the hardest decision to make and not much to be said about Kane and his value to the team. Whether we will keep him is up in the air right now but I doubt there is a single Spurs fan that would want him sold.

Son Heung-min – keep

Exactly the same as with Kane. Sonny is a player that we must keep if we are serious about being a top team, you simply do not sell your best assets unless you are given no choice in the matter.

Vinicius – sell

Was on the fence about the Brazilian and while I do see some advantages to keeping him, I am not sure that he is a long term solution to either a back up or replacement for Kane. Spurs could probably do better with what he would cost to make his loan move permanent.

Gareth Bale – keep

Probably the most controversial decision but for me, he should be kept. His experience is invaluable, he must be bringing a lot to the training sessions and you have to think the youngsters are learning from him. He is also a good choice from the bench and we have seen that he is capable of reproducing some of his old form. A tricky one for me this but on the whole, I think another season will be of benefit.

Lucas Moura – sell

Just too inconsistent for my liking and he is at an age that we could raise a half decent fee still. I see Moura as someone to bring off the bench and make an impact and to be honest, he does not fill me with confidence when that is the case. Put it this way, I have far more faith that the likes of Bale would make more of an impact that the Brazilian.

Steven Bergwijn – keep

I am a great fan of Bergwijin and he is a work in progress, I am of the opinion he will be a huge asset in the future and he has to be a keeper.

I expected Bale to be tearing it up, unless he has a spell of peak form soon I would 100% send him back – his wages upset the equilibrium of the squad. No way he deserves more than Kane & Son.

Kane and Son imperative to keep, Bale I would keep if his situation can be improved with everything that goes with it, and renegotiate his wages to a more realistic level.
Sell or send back the others and buy Danny Ings, all of this is depending on whether Mourinho stays, and in order to get those four named he would be the one to have to go, if we want a forward line that offers a goal threat.

New language new culture and a much more unforgiving league. He obviously ain’t ready YET. think ndom. I reckon we’ll get him for much cheaper. I understand why José would chose to play son a head of him at the moment.

Moura is a Aaron Lennon ver 2. Lots of running down the right flank, usually into nothing. Wasteful at best with his shooting. But he has the ability to cause chaos and just sometimes that works beautifully.
Has pedigree if not flawed, probably effective off the bench against tiring opposition. So keep would be the verdict as to get a replacement to do the same would cost a whole lot more.

Why has JM hardly played him? Even with Kane out. That is the question.

Not sure that Moura is in fact that skilful at the top level. Heis rarely involved in build up play or assists. Lightning fast, a good shot but he loses the ball far too much by running at defenders. It worked in the game v Wolfsburg but that’s his level.

Bruce, as Willie points out, Vini is on loan, but for the purposes of the debate in a hypothetical scenario, I would keep Vini over Bale in a heartbeat.
At least he tries. He’s definitely more of a threat in front of goal, and we’ll not even get into value for money. I reckon if Kane was out for a prolonged period and Carlos got a run of game time, he could come up with the goods.
Moura, I know he gets a bad rep, and I understand he’s inconsistent, but on his day he’s quick as grease lightening, he works hard, he’s skillful, and can pop up with a match-winning goal or two. A good squad player. I like him. Never going to be a stand-out, but I would keep.

I want to replace two players who one is done in sissoko poor in recent games and is saying he might go and one who can’t play 8 games and is then out for 10.Skipp needs a chance he is on reports at winks level now or better and in prouse as a squad player and homegrown something everyone keeps missing is better than sissoko.

You want to replace two players who run all day, are physically dominant, who put in tackles in Lamela/Sissoko, with a championship player prospect and lightweight free kick specialist? That’s one take on matters, I suppose.

Japh is more than good enough to compliment PEH in central midfield sometimes. japh can defend and attack very well. He can have the ball under heavy manners and can pick a pass. No one’s knocking him off it and he’s a very clean tackler. He’ll score few too in the future. Leders. Teach him more than you know. Sanchez needs to “step a side

Bruce, we can’t sell a player we don’t own. Vinicius is a loan deal, he belongs to Benfica.

Lucas is a dangerous little squad player. I wouldn’t sell him. Bergys getting better (a few things to work on) but he stays too. Bale max% stays (first hour or last half hour) for me dier Davies and winks can fck off. Power serge and Doherty one has to go. (Not serge.

Vini has only been at the club 5 minutes. Can’t communicate with his team mates properly and has hardly played.

Gareth Bale

Wonder if levy could/would negotiate a lower salary contribution for bale for 1 more year .

Is it fair to say that it has taken him this length of time to build fitness to a much more physically demanding league (from zero football/injuries for a very long period).

perhaps they realised that once he arrived and always had year 2 has a goal ( I am naively optimistic)

if anyone could – levy could

I think who stays will depend on will they sign a new contract and if not who can we get to replace them. I would as most fans would love haaland at dortmund however even if Harry and son were sold can’t see levy paying the money. For me bale goes back to Madrid, vini goes back to benfica so no money there to gain much lost. Moura is a difficult one, decent for cup and bench but don’t know. My dream window if Harry and son both decided to leave would be haaland, greelish, vardy/ings with sissoko, winks and lamela going out in midfield and ward prouse our young guy at Norwich coming back to replace them.
