Gareth Bale was the only Real Madrid player that refused to take a pay cut when the club asked the players to help, according to a report coming out of Spain.
The Welshman had been at the Bernabeu since he moved there from Tottenham in 2013.
He has helped them to win every club trophy, but he is still not accorded as much respect as Cristiano Ronaldo or any other club legend.
As a matter of fact, he had fallen out of favour with his manager as well as club fans at the time he left them for Tottenham this summer.
This may have been one reason why he didn’t feel obliged to help the club, after all, they weren’t on good terms.
Marca claims that every Real Madrid player agreed to take a 10% reduction on their salary to help the club due to Covid-19, but Bale refused.
It claims that the Spurs loanee was advised by his representatives not to allow the Spanish giants to touch any part of his wages.
It adds that Sergio Ramos spoke to his teammates and explained to them why they needed to help the club as it was losing money due to the pandemic.
After listening to him closely, his teammates obliged without hesitation, except Bale.
Strange how this news did not break at the time in the same way it did with Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, especially when you consider how negative the press has been towards Bale, they would have loved to have made this an issue at the time, yet they did not.
Maybe news because the Spanish clubs are now going to ask the players to take bigger salary cuts. Bale is a useful scapegoat now he’s gone.
