The Daily Mail Ranks where Tanguy Ndombele fits in the history of worst Spurs signings

By Eddie Razo -

Over the weekend, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele left the pitch against Morecambe FC with supporters booing him. As a result, The Daily Mail put together a top-10 ranking of the worst transfer signings made by the north London club.

When it comes to Ndombele, there might be some recency bias regarding his rank, but the English media outlet puts the France international at No. 2 on their list.

Tottenham shattered their transfer record, spending £55-million to get Ndombele, and now the Premier League club ponders whether to offload him two and half years after acquiring him.

When it comes to the top five of worst signings, Vincent Janssen comes in at fifth place, Roberto Soldado is fourth, Sergei Rebrov is third, and in first place is Bongani Khumalo.

The January transfer window is open for another two and a half weeks, it will be interesting to see whether Tottenham can pull off a deal that allows the France international to have a fresh start elsewhere.

Adebayor (!) who used to turn up at the training ground in his expensive car and utter the words “life is good” and seemed not at all bothered whether he got a game or not!

Mind you, the point at which Sissoko achieved almost cult like status was the moment when we realized we were slipping!

Relatively speaking, we don’t make many decent signings, do we?

Celtic, about 25 years ago (?), unearthed a Brazilian who COULDN’T play! His name was something like Rafael Scheidt (sounds like shite!). The general opinion was that his surname was a fairly accurate description of his play! A centre half, I think.

Just think of that line-up of misfits/injury-prone/unproven/barely played individuals.

The hard part was actually picking an 11 given the huge list to draw from

In the disappointment stakes he wasn’t the worst by any means but Paulinho is up there for me.

In an era where being Brazilian still meant something magical, Tottenham somehow after scouring the world managed to find the most unBrazilian Brazilian.

Anyone remember the Brazilian Gilberto and Toda from Japan? For cost Ndombele is the worst. At least Soldado and Rebrov put some effort in.

At least Rose was good for a while. When has N’Dombele ever been good? Brief flashes of genius that if you blinked you’d miss, that’s about it. Rose was part of a very good side.

If we were playing Value For Money Top Trumps, Ndombele would be the dud card.

Hard to choose a top 10, to be fair, but surely you’d have to shoehorn one of Rasiak, Zamora and dos Santos into it.

You couldn’t fault Soldado for effort. Most Spurs fans were willing him to succeed and I don’t think they ever turned on him.

Tanguy could learn something from Bobby, just give it your all and the fans will be on your side, just like Sissoko turned it round.

The balance of power between club and players has swung too far to the players advantage.

I think it’s a matter of time before the clubs move against the players especially with the American influence in the game.

Far tighter contracts, a wage cap, agents fees capped.

Spot On. If you want to succeed in anything the first requisite is you have to want to. This Guy does not want to. Hats Off to Levy. Aka Mr Shrewd.

Having seen the list now you could add more, what about Chirices and Nkodu was the name, as further examples, incredible wastes of money, much worse than Soldado imo.

I don’t believe this kind of behaviour is allowed in other sports, but in other industries you wouldn’t last the week, and I haven’t looked at the list yet 🤣

This can happen with four and five year contacts if they all started on a one year deal and had to prove themselves it might be better.

Clubs must bring out a clause in players contracts that can terminate them for gross misconduct , players and the cancer of the game agents, have too much power. That certain LB is a disgrace but at least he’s not stealing money from this club anymore, Ndom is another example of this and yet we signed him despite his dubious history.

Not for that waster. Not in a million years. Stinking attitude from Day one. Reminds me of a certain left back we used to have. A left back who I understand has been told after just 7 months he won’t play in a Watford shirt again. A left back who, I’ve been reading, will refuse to leave and run down the last year and a half of his contract in defiance. Clubs of calibre won’t pay decent money on disruptive, petulant children like these.
The upside is, at least Ndombele WANTS to leave.

In terms of attitude and the disruption he’s caused, the fact he has talent but doesn’t feel obliged to put in effort for the team, the fact he was a record signing and earns a fortune every week, the reality that he’s not played well under three (four I guess) managers, THAT performance in the NLD (due to the combo of attitude, laziness and just plain reading the game possibly the worst I’ve ever seen from such a high profile squad member), plus the damning evidence of the Amazon doc…I’m calling him out worst signing (overall, all things considered) ever.

Rebrov and Soldado etc didn’t derail us like this
