“That was probably the toughest year of my career that” midfielder regrets not doing well at Tottenham

By Bruce Grove -

Danny Murphy has revealed that he does regret being a Tottenham flop after he failed to make the anticipated impression at Spurs when he played for them.

He had made a name for himself at Liverpool before moving to Charlton Athletic for a two-year stint and he signed for Spurs ahead of the 2006/2007 season.

Much was expected from Murphy when he made that move, but his spell in north London isn’t one that he and the club will look back on fondly.

The midfielder was heavily criticised for his performances at the club and there were even reports that he had fallen out with his then manager, Martin Jol.

He was forced to deny those rumours and he has now revealed that he was weighed down by the death of his dad.

He admitted that Spurs was a wonderful club to be in at the time before admitting that he probably should have spoken more about his struggles due to his father’s death when it happened.

Underling his biggest regret, Murphy said on Talksport: “Not showing the Spurs fans what I was capable of. I had a bad time there.

“I lost my dad during that time, and it’s hard to talk about actually. It was a wonderful club with lots of good people and I went there with really good intentions.

“Maybe at the time I should have spoken a bit more to give the fans an understanding.

“That was probably the toughest year of my career that – it really was.”
