“Thank heavens, I ended up with them.” Spurs legend brilliant jibe at Arsenal

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham and Arsenal are arguably the fiercest rivals in English football at the moment.

The bitter foes don’t want to share anything, and one of the biggest sins that anyone can commit is to play for both clubs.

They rarely allow their best players to join the other team and players who do join simply soil their reputation for life.

Gary Lineker scored 60 plus goals in just over 100 games for Tottenham and he is considered by some of the club’s fans as a legend.

The Englishman also had a stint with Everton, Leicester City and Barcelona during his playing career.

He, however, recently revealed that he nearly joined Arsenal instead of Tottenham.

He claimed that when he wanted to leave Barcelona in 1989, he had the chance to join the Gunners after deciding that London would be best for him.

However, Arsenal missed their chance to sign him because their manager then, George Graham was “quite tight”.

He told Sun Sports: “It was 1989, a year before the World Cup (in Italy), so I thought I was perhaps better off going back to England (after Barcelona).

“I quite fancied living in London, and Arsenal were the best team at that time.

“I thought that would appeal, as they were a really good side.

“But (Gunners then-manager) George Graham was famously quite tight and they got nowhere near the required rate.

“Then Tottenham came along and, thank heavens, I ended up with them.”
