Tanganga Fondly Recalls Ehiogu Days

By Ron Carne -

Japhet Tanganga has opened up on how he became a Tottenham fan and has paid tribute to former coach Ugo Ehiogu.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season for Spurs, making nine appearances for the senior side to date.

Speaking about his childhood, the talented youngster has conceded that he grew up a Manchester United fan, but is now very much part of the Tottenham faithful.

“I actually didn’t grow up supporting Tottenham when I was a little boy,” he told talkSPORT. “I grew up with my dad watching Man United and I always used to see them on the TV when I was young.”

“But once I signed and was around here every day, I just grew to love Tottenham. I loved watching them play, going to games and seeing them, so they became my favourite team. I wasn’t really a Tottenham fan before, but now I am.”

Tanganga went on to speak about various topics, including getting his big opportunity from Jose Mourinho and what it was like making his senior debut against Liverpool.

However, there was a touching part of his interview too, as he discussed the influence former coach Ehiogu had on his development before his tragic death in 2017.

“Oh yeah. I remember when he passed away a lot of us [Spurs’ academy players] were talking, saying we want to do this for him,” he added. “The amount of time he put into us, in training and talking to us, I do miss him. He played a big part in my development, just helping me.

“Hopefully he’s up in heaven watching me, seeing what I’m doing and he’s proud of me. I’m just so grateful for him.”

Tanganga will hope to continue to make a positive impact when Spurs face Burnley on Saturday.
