Continuing his form from the previous seasons, he scored 3 and assisted 6 in his first 11 games for Spurs before suffering an unfortunate ankle injury which has kept him out since.
Despite his brilliant performances, pundit Paul Merson has made a rather harsh claim about him and his teammate Rodrigo Bentancur.
The Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, refused to hype up the Tottenham duo during a debate with a random fan on the social media platform X.
While responding to an individual who asserted that Bentancur, Maddison, Kevin de Bruyne, and Rodri are among the top four midfielders in the division, Merson replied:
“Take your Tottenham glasses off and please do not put Bentancur and Maddison in the same breath as De Bruyne and Rodri…. I’m big fans of Bentancur and Maddison but not near the other 2!”

The Lilywhites’ supporters did not take the comment lightly and swiftly responded in the replies.
Many fans believe that while Maddison may not currently possess the same quality as de Bruyne, he is not very far behind him.
Similarly, Bentancur is a highly accomplished footballer. Having secured three Serie A titles with Juventus, the Uruguayan displays tactical versatility.
He can occupy various roles, whether a box-to-box midfielder, mezalla, or an attacking midfield. Not to mention his leadership traits, the 26-year-old represents a complete package in himself.
He has arguably their best player last season before the injury that kept him out for 9 months.
And he showed against United how important a player he can be in the midfield.

James Maddison has been a consistent performer in the Premier League since years and Bentancur was one of the best in his position before his injury.
While the City duo may be better, the Tottenham midfielders are right behind them in terms of performance.
