Japhet Tanganga earned himself rave reviews from Tottenham Hotspur fans for his Premier League debut performance against Liverpool.
The 20-year-old, with 66 minutes of first-team football in his locker, was the silver lining in a 1-0 defeat inflicted by Roberto Firmino’s first-half strike.
Jose Mourinho parked the bus – and had very little choice but to do so considering our injuries and distinct lack of midfield – and trusted Tanganga to deploy a low block against the best attack in Europe.
He more than held his own, winning his headers, keeping Sadio Mane relatively quiet, bringing the ball out from the back occasionally. The highlight of his display was an incredible clearance off the line.

Spurs supporters on Twitter were thrilled with what they saw from the young centre-back and want him to be a permanent part of our defence.
@SpursOfficial start Tanganga every week now

Should be #thfc's back-three for the foreseeable future!
There were some positives in that performance. Probably get lost in amongst all the venom on here but I wanna say Tanganga was excellent. A few tweaks needed and he had a couple of blips but with more opportunities he gains experience and the lad could be very very good.

Unlucky lads. Best performance we’ve seen from the boys in a long time. Tanganga was absolutely sensational, hopefully we see him more often.

Heads up, move on, let’s have a strong second half to the season.
Tanganga was immense, lo celso has to play every week he changes the game without fail

It will be interesting to see whether this was a one-off experiment from Mourinho to combat Liverpool’s pace, or whether Tanganga will feature more prominently going forward.

The serial loser get the Barca job? He’ll be a winner soon enough because he’ll be backed…
Im the source?! Very much doubt it as people that understand footy can see what’s happened under Jose and it’s not looking pretty.
How many abominable performances does he need to serve up before people conclude that he hasn’t improved us whatsoever?
Three recent articles by Jonathan Liew, Greg Lea and James Morgan appear to show them to be reading THE BOY HOTSPUR .After our Liverpool game each has commented on the issues we have been discussing re the Jose effect, style at Spurs and how we set up as the home team. After careful research Easty I believe you are the source. Nobody who knows football could arrive at the same conclusions you do by their own observations!
And to top it off Pochettino has been linked with Barcelona. The main issue here would be his prior connection with Espanyol.
Fancy that. Some of our posters will be perplexed that their negative comments appear to be at odds with the real world.
Spurs Are known for playing a certain way, even since the days of Arthur Rowe (well before my time!). George Graham was a bad fit not only because he was ex Ar5ena1 but because his approach was so bloody dull.
If we turn our back on the football values that are part of the club’s identity what are you left with? Sure if you win lots of stuff playing dull footy that’s one thing but if you aren’t winning stuff that way, what’s the point?
😂
The 2 managers you mentioned says something too. Ole under pressure, constant job speculation and the newbie Lampard at a struggling Chelsea both comfortable tacticians against us. Klopp never without a smile yesterday.
What did Potter do wrong to deserve a spell under Levy?
Instructions, long ball to Moura and Son on the counter. Why did we up tempo later in 2nd half? We had 2 footballers on the pitch in Lamela and Lo and the whole dynamic changed.
Good management?
Poch better than Klopp, Klopp just given the right tools to do his job…
I know, it’s an excruciatingly embarrassing situation.
I think we could do worse than Graham Potter. It’s strange that he was given a big contract extension at Brighton not long before Poch was sacked.
Perhaps Levy was sniffing around? I quite like the look of him and at least win, lose or draw we’d keep the ball down and play some bloody football…
He’s a modern manager.
Lumped it up to the midget, I have no idea what that was all about apart from hopefulness in a desperate situation.
DD, would you also sign the ‘Graham Potter in’ petition with me?
And we were better than them 3 years ago, now people are gushing to get a 0-1 at “home” against them.
Benteke can’t hit a barn door from three feet away these days. I guess he’s someone to lump it up to though right? 😂
I’m with you, I can see Jose saying in the end ”I did all I could under the circumstances but it didn’t work out”. Wrong man for the wrong job…
If you include Bayern then 4th big match. Tanganga was a highlight, was good to see him play at that level and look ready, albeit in a man marking role on Mane.
I agree, people are kidding themselves that we did anything other than avoid a hiding yesterday. We played like that’s what we were trying to do as well. Had Kane played then perhaps that late period would have brought a goal but it was too little too late.
Speaking with a mate at a car boot earlier about Europa League and how torn I am. I know that league will hinder us regarding winning any of the two little cups and winning the league but at the same time I wanna watch football. I can watch all the Europa League games free on community tickets. I just wanna watch football at my local ground. If our PL2 and ladies team played local it wouldn’t be so bad. So 8th or 5th? I gotta go 5th.
Alastair gold is reporting we may be about to do a deal with Palace that involves kwp and benteke coming our way, both loans. Sorry, but if that’s the case I will psss myself laughing. Look at the evidence. A chairman who has booked guns n roses for CL final night. Loads of faith there Daniel, be mildly amusing to see us make it and watch him squirm before we get a hiding off whoever we play. All previous managers saying we didn’t get what we wanted basically, and now poor Jose stuck with same scenario and has said so. And in the middle we have a bloke who got us to the final last year, consistent CL football, no home ground for nearly 2 years, no transfers for a couple and we have people slagging him off. I find that staggering. The proof will come when a serial winner like Jose turns round and says there’s nothing I can do, and it will come. Anyone says that he has asked for benteke best get to the Dr quick style, cis you got real mental health issues. I’ve said it til I’m blue in the face, but there’s one thread that’s remained constant and that is the Prince of darkness. We mover into that place so we could get benteke on loan???? Joke.
Apparently everything we are made of can be found in the earth or on it. That’ll do me😁
Clasford MBE says young jaff is a fine young man that loves his god. Total faith in him to get him where he wants to be. Wish I had a higher power. I do. The earth. “The earth is the lord in the fullness thereof” Bob Marley
Tanganga of Tottenham. My boy.
Talk of strikers hitting a purple patch Dany Ings, Danny Ings, Danny Ings!! Boy came good. Well done me lad!!
What frustrated is why our keeper and Toby lumped the ball up top to nil effect??
Easty IMO you a being a wee harsh. Yes first half Liverpool were the dominant force but in the second half we upped the tempo spurning some presentable chances at least one of which we ought to have converted. Yes whilst we still lost overall slightly more upbeat, better than expected.
Tanganga was the only bright spot. It was awful yesterday otherwise.
Seeing as we’re going to be in the Ropey next season anyway, can we just get a manager who plays nice football?
If we aren’t going to win anything under Levy, we may as well play something easy on the eye. I’d prefer Graham Potter to the ‘not so Kosher one’…
I don’t understand how these players, )including Winks and Eriksen) could play such slick passing football a couple of seasons ago and now they can’t string two passes together.
Jose’s approach reminds me very much of AVB (unsurprisingly). It’s never going to be on the front foot, it’s always reactive.
The reason why it’s a dated approach is that most of the big sides play the high press style. If you try and soak that up and sit in you will concede eventually.
Playing to ‘frustrate’ the opposition is not fitting for a top side and especially at home. Despite missing Kane and Sissoko. It’s what bottom half teams do away, to try and pick up points.
At the end of the day we lost yet again to another big club. We have lost EVERY game against top 6 opponents so far under Jose.
Think about it, this is the born winner, the tactical schemer and the the man for the big matches right? You’d have thought against Utd and Cheatski that he would have had particular points to prove.
Ok, he’s our manager now so give him some time but the main issue right now for me is the approach, win, lose or draw. It no longer cuts it at the top level.
You can have 300m to spend like Jose did at Utd or be working with a stale and jaded squad as he is at Spurs. Fundamentally this approach is slowly looking more and more like old hat.
Besides, we are Spurs so I rather see us lose 4-3 rather than 1-0 all day long. Playing like you’re trying not to get beaten rather than at least trying to take the game to the opponents just isn’t in our DNA.
Jose is doing his best the way he knows but I see no long term future under him whatsoever…
Grinding out one nils is what those teams do best who go on to win the PL title which Liverpools well oiled machine will deservedly do at a canter.
Great to see Tanganga get rave reviews. Not sorry to see him go conversely Eriksen was a disaster. Rose has lost it. Regarding Winks what does he actually do?
Klopp “I’d like to thank the stadium designer on making a large fantastic away changing room”………see, it was worth all that money after all…
He’ll go back to Verts, just as he keeps going back to Eriksen.
