Spurs will still pay Mourinho £10m despite his Roma appointment

By Bruce Grove -

Jose Mourinho’s appointment as the latest manager of AS Roma should have been good news for Tottenham, considering they will save some money from paying his wages.

However, a new revelation shows that Spurs will still pay him more than the Italians are doing until his Tottenham contract expires.

Mourinho was one of the best managers in the world and Spurs took a huge decision to make him their boss in 2019.

He was being paid £15m per season to help the Lilywhites end their wait for a trophy and to earn a return to the top four.

His reign ended a few weeks ago after the club decided he can no longer help them achieve their goals.

AS Roma has made him their newest boss starting from next season, 15 days after he got the sack at Spurs.

Sun Sports says Roma is only paying him £5m per season and that means Spurs will still shoulder the balance of £10m from the deal he signed with them until the contract expires.

The report says this is because of the agreement he had with Tottenham as a part of his severance package.

I remember that second reason (Ronaldo’s vanity), being reported at the time AND that Ronaldo would not pass to him the following season……..

i suspect that his contract has a clause that says if he is dismissed he gets one years salary, that is generally an industry norm. If he took a low salary in year one and was dismissed in that time that would be the amount he was due in compensation.

Good point. Probably some tax rules.

3 year contract so maybe all 3 years have to be the same value? If not then as you say why not pay him £1 for the first year (Spurs making up the other £14,999,999) then £5m per year for the next 2 years

Let’s hope he remembers them all. The Hollywood star WC Fields was said not have trusted banks or accountants and had multiple bank accounts.

Only problem was he never told anyone the account details and with his death the money was never recovered.

If this is true, why didn’t Roma offer £1m per year leaving Spurs to pay £14m?

Just read a review of a book called The Football Leaks.

It says that Bale’s transfer fee to Real Madrid was actually for €10 million more than stated at the time.

Two possible reasons were given, one it was done for tax reasons and the second reason was that it was done to play into Cristiano Ronaldo’s vanity as it would have meant that Bale was the most expensive player in the world not Ronaldo.

Not so slow our Daniel. I wonder what else has been hidden.

No other job in the world, maybe banking execs, affords the rewards for failure than top flight football manager. Mourinho must have 26 accounts to fit all his money in…..no sooner has one job of multi millions plus compensation gone….another arrives. License to print money…

So what’s this I hear? Our master negotiator has tied himself in another financial knot. You couldn’t make this stuff up.He really is becoming a laughing stock. No doubt Mourinho and the Roma board are having a huge giggle knowing this situation exists and is why they got him so cheaply.
