Tottenham Hotspur are a much better team when Son Heung-min is playing.
This isn’t exactly a bold statement or expert observation. The South Korea international has, after all, registered three goals and three assists in just 666 Premier League minutes this season.
That takes Son’s total to 165 goals and 87 assists in 419 appearances for Spurs across all competitions since joining in 2015.
During that time, he’s helped Spurs reach EFL Cup and Champions League finals, but has been unable to inspire the club to end their long trophy drought.
But Son is now 32 years old and with injuries hindering him this season, there’s a debate regarding whether or not his contract — which expires next summer — should be extended.
It’s hard to see Spurs letting their club captain go just yet but there’s no doubt his days at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are numbered.
Is Son Heung-min still ‘world-class’?
Son elevates Spurs every time he plays but can a player who is only now capable of short bursts still be regarded as ‘world-class’?
The answer, according to former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara, is no.
“He (Son) was. He is not world-class now. I think he has been a world-class player. He is not world-class anymore,” O’Hara told talkSPORT (via TBR).
“Listen, I am not disrespecting the guy. He is a legend, I love him. And when he plays, he makes us better, but he is not world-class.”
Son scored from the spot in South Korea’s recent World Cup qualifier against Kuwait.
Spurs will hope the forward brings that form back to London with him as they prepare to travel to Manchester City this weekend before hosting Roma in the Europa League.
The Lilywhites are currently 10th in the Premier League table following a shock 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.
