Sky Sports Pundit: Mourinho Is Levy’s Last Chance To Keep Kane

By Ron Carne -

Amid plenty of speculation regarding Harry Kane’s future, Ian Wright believes he’ll remain with Tottenham for another season.

The Spurs captain caused a stir over the weekend, as he told Sky Sports that he could consider an exit if he felt as though the club weren’t moving closer towards winning trophies.

Kane has bagged 181 goals in 278 appearances for Spurs in what has been a superb spell with the club, but he has yet to secure any silverware to show for his efforts.

While there has been a general reaction amongst pundits insisting that Spurs fans shouldn’t begrudge the England international a move away if it were to materialise after what he’s given to Tottenham, Wright doesn’t believe he’s going anywhere just yet.

“Now they have a manager who is a notorious winner of trophies,” Wright told BBC Sport. “Kane did say ‘next year will be the first chance the gaffer will have to bed his values into the team’.

“That says to me he is somebody who is already thinking of next year, so he’s not going anywhere.

“I’d give this manager a chance with his pre-season, do next season and see where it goes. Because from when he made his debut up to now, I think he has given them everything he can.

“If nothing happens and Harry Kane decides to leave then you have you have to say ‘well, he’s under Mourinho, nothing has changed’. He wants to win medals.

“You can’t have that kind of ability, that kind of goalscorer who is able to win matches, and not win anything. You can’t.”

Time will tell if that’s what Kane is ultimately thinking, as with Mourinho hoping to bring in reinforcements this summer coupled with his track record of winning everywhere he has been, it’s only fair to judge him after a full season in charge.

Signings ahead of next season could instil more confidence that Spurs are ready to compete, allowing them to move on from the end of the cycle under Mauricio Pochettino and start a fresh one under their current boss.

Should they fail to do so though, a lack of trophies next season could ultimately call for the end of Kane’s spell in north London, as suggested by Wright.

Thank you for explaining that. When I worked in the City, many years ago, we were only paid a bonus for making money for the company. Levy and his acolytes march to a different tune, where failure is rewarded. What you described in the US is also applicable to public companies there buying in their own stock to boost the share price, so that the directors can exercise their share options at an appropriately profitable level. The visuals on the pay cut for staff is terrible for Levy, but one could have guessed that if anyone was going to do this first, it had to be Levy or Mike Ashley as they are cut from the same cloth. Levyologists will say it’s good business management. I would say something different.

I’m so so proud to be Tottenham (always have been) I’m hearing amazing things about what’s happening in there right about now. All will be revealed. Love you baby. She’s not interested in football at present. She’s focusing on her community. We love you baby.

Yes. But Liverpool’s peak is behind them, at least with the current squad. Milner, Henderson, Salah all past their peak. Bench is going downhill in a hurry too – Llalana, Shaquiri, are past it. Ox and Gini both wildly overrated players. They’re going to need a lot of players over the next 3 years.

Sure, I can explain it. The businesses hire “executive compensation” consultants and/or form a committee. These consultants cobble together a fig leave justification and recommend whatever the CEOs want. It’s a rigged scheme – the consultants know that their future business relies on those companies hiring them, and no CEO is going to hire them if they’re not going to play the game of charades and rec an exorbitant salary. This is rampant in the US publicly traded companies, where supposedly shareholders would be able to rein this garbage in. Seen it up close, for decades.

200% over budget.
He originally said 400m. He would have known what the reaction would be if he’d said 1.2 Billion.

I believe that it was deferred until the stadium was finished. That still doesn’t change anything. It was still a year late and 100% over budget. Bonuses are generally paid for outperformance. You could argue that the going rate for the transfer value of any player has effectively halved. Even allowing for this, it is a time to be bold and seize the initiative. Coronavirus and it’s consequences are not going to last forever.

Ah but what is Harry worth now? I’m not Daniel’s biggest fan, but according to the Guardian the £3 million bonus was deferred, though it doesn’t say when it was deferred to.

Let me get this right. The chairman was awarded a £3 mill bonus for delivering the new stadium over a season late, and 100% over budget. Would somebody be kind enough to explain how the bonus system works in modern day business? Furthermore, Levy is already preparing the way for players to take wage cuts, and to use the current situation as an excuse not to reinforce the side for next season. What he should be doing, of course, is taking advantage of the situation by signing the top quality players we need with clubs who need the money desperately. What is Coutinho worth now? Carpe Diem Levy, and for once in your miserable life, get ahead of the curve.

Very interesting statement from the chairman, asking the players and managers to take a pay cut, saying Barca, Bayern, and Juventus have done it, I think Barcelona players have taken a 70 percent pay cut. Talks about transfers likely to go way down and mentions fans losing their jobs. All lovely interesting stuff, I will be interested to see what a season ticket costs next season.

Problem is we’re playing catch up, so what if Levy buys three or four players, Liverpool and Man City will buy more and of a higher quality than we do, it’s the usual one step forward two steps back. As regards Harry it’s getting to the point where it doesn’t matter whether he stays or goes. He’ll be out injured shortly through overuse again.
