Sky Sports man confirms Tottenham now ready to sell 30-year-old in January

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge, Tottenham could be willing to cash in on Matt Doherty in January.

The former Wolves man had to earn his spot last season as well as he forced his way into Conte’s starting XI bagging 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. However, an unfortunate injury against Aston Villa saw his season come to an end.

He has struggled to become a regular under Conte ever since. Emerson Royal has been preferred by the Italian this season despite the Brazilian being in poor form himself.

The Irishman has only made three starts, which came when he replaced the suspended Royal, and despite Conte’s praise for his performances, he failed to claim his place in the starting XI.

And Michael Bridge believes that Spurs will be willing to cash in on the right-back.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think if there was an interest in Doherty in January, they might pursue that as well. But it’s a sad one with him because last season before his injury against Aston Villa, he was outstanding, absolutely outstanding.”

Paul Brown had claimed a couple of weeks ago that the former Wolves man is not impressing Conte in training behind the scenes which is why we have seen very little of him this season.

Conte is likely to want to upgrade the right wing-back position next summer, and both Doherty and Emerson could depart. However, it is unlikely that the club will allow the player to leave in January unless they sign a replacement.

I’d rather keep Doherty and jettison Royal at this juncture, neither.are good enough but I genuinely believe the Gooner is a better right wingback than Royal. However, Royal is probably slight more reliable defensively, so our defensive manager picks him.

All becoming rather dull now, which is what happens when you don’t back the manager…
