“Something has obviously happened there”: Reporter says one Tottenham player isn’t doing enough ‘in training’

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to reporter Paul Brown, Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty isn’t doing enough in training to impress Antonio Conte.

Spurs’ right-wing-back position has been a major source of concern this season, with Emerson Royal consistently preferred for the position despite his poor performances.

And despite Royal’s form, Matt Doherty and new signing Djed Spenced have struggled to get playing time. Conte in a recent interview had very bluntly claimed that he does not have enough trust in the Irishman to play the position yet.

Brown has now claimed that something could be going on behind the scenes with Djed Spence which could only explain why Conte has not been playing him. While regarding Doherty he believes that the former Wolves man must not be doing enough in training to convince the manager.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“Something has obviously happened there, because it’s clear that Conte did not push to sign Djed Spence and doesn’t think he’s ready and it’s clear Doherty is not doing in training what Emerson is.”

Last season prior to his injury, Doherty had cemented his place as Conte’s first choice right-wing back but ever since he has returned from injury, he seems to have fallen down the pecking order.

He has been urged to leave the club to find regular playing time by former Spurs man Alan Hutton and if the circumstances do not change for him, he could potentially leave sooner than later.

Doherty didn’t leave in the summer because of the paucity of options and depth in that position. They went for Spence, a young player clearly not ready to implement Conte’s methods yet, so we are stuck with the substandard Royal. This nonsense about the transfer window needs to stop, it was insufficient, barely adequate at best. If it was that great then we wouldn’t have 3 crappy right wingbacks…
