Rumoured Harry Kane £200M Exit: The Numbers Don’t Add Up [opinion]

By The Boy -

It was pretty likely after Harry Kane’s recent interview with Jamie Redknapp whose wife left him that the Spurs talisman and England captain would be linked with an exit from N17.

Today, The Sun suggests that Kane’s interview had infuriated Tottenham’s part owner Daniel Levy, and the impending economic crash courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic, was bad timing for a player who was unprepared to publicly commit his future.

Using a valuation of some £200million, The Sun believes that Levy would view Harry Kane as convenient solution to the sizeable losses that the club is currently accruing while the season is suspended.

During the normal course of business, it is not impossible to believe that Mr. Levy would pull this Alan Sugar type of stroke in order to ensure the Spurs ship remained economically steady.

However, business is not normal. Beyond us trying to exist whilst some loony despot was raining bombs upon our heads, it is difficult to imagine how business could be less normal.

Also, there’s the excellent piece from The Athletic which I shared with you recently, which carried views from several football agents who believed that the player market was undoubtedly destined to crash.

Harry Kane could well be sold, after all, as Finn reminded us in no uncertain terms this morning, ENIC’s business credentials are impeccable. The need to retain Kane if Tottenham are to win trophies comes a very distant second. Whatever happens, Harry Kane is highly unlikely to ever be worth £200million again; at least not in this lifetime.

English players are worth more to because of squad places. I’d say keep the English core. We’re not good enough to get rid of winks and Dier – we’d have to be a lot better before we consider selling.

I think Levy would do well to get £100 million. The only player to fetch £200 would be Mbappe, who is younger, has no injury history like Harry and has more room to improve. The exorbitant fee is to frighten off clubs, remember the big fee on Eriksen, how did that work out? If Levy thinks he can hold Harry Kane to ransom he might just find himself with an injury prone player suffering from an inexplicable loss of form.

Anything close to £150m is worth taking, but only if there is a plan to buy quality in return. No point getting 4 N’Googleme’s, we’d want 4 ready to go players who will improve us from the off. How many of the current squad would be wanted by the top teams, Kane and Son are the only two I can think of, then we are on dodgy ground? Lo Celso and Dele need to step up, but reinforcements are needed if we are to compete with the top 4 again. Would it be too much to offload Winks, Dier and Dele to boost funds, Dele is the only one I think could come good, but that is more in hope than certainty? No way are times too difficult that we have to sell to balance the books. We are in a better state than most other clubs in Europe so if we are feeling the pinch I’d like to know everyone else’s financial situation. Either way, we have shown the squad we currently have is not good enough to play well, never mind compete.

Kane’s had a few to nick bits off. Soldado. Lorrente. Ade. Jansen. can’t think of anymore. Lorentte was brilliant for Kane.
