Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest regarding Tottenham’s pursuit of James Maddison.
The attacking midfielder has been the subject of transfer speculation since last year, with both Tottenham and Newcastle United expressing interest at that time.
However, Leicester’s hefty asking price deterred any potential deals.Tottenham and Newcastle were interested in signing him then but found Leicester’s asking price too much.
With just one year remaining on Maddison’s current contract and Leicester City suffering relegation, the midfielder is now poised to depart the club.
Newcastle and Spurs have remained strongly linked with his signature, but recent reports indicate that Tottenham is the more likely destination.
And Fabrizio Romano has also suggested the same that despite Newcastle holding the Champions League edge over Spurs, it is the North London club who remain the favourites to sign him.
He claims that the player is reportedly in talks with both clubs, but he is aware of Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is personally pushing to secure his signature. He also claimed that Tottenham plans to submit a bid in the coming days.
In his column for CaughtOffside, he wrote:
“Newcastle have been insisting on Maddison for some days but Tottenham are now seen as favourite.”
“The player is speaking to both sides but he knows Ange Postecoglou is pushing a lot to get things done. Tottenham are working hard and plan to submit a bid in the next days.
“On the fee, it will be discussed again in the next days but Leicester are looking for around £50m for the England international.”
Maddison has established himself as one of the league’s best midfielders, consistently delivering top-level performances for several years.
He has scored 55 goals and 41 assists in 203 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Tottenham have already secured the signing of Dejan Kulusevski and agreed a deal with Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and looks like James Maddison could be their next target.
Spurs are expected to have a very busy summer transfer window as new manager Ange Postecoglou looks to shape the new team according to his philosophy and style of play.
A number of players are set to leave and several new names are expected to come in as the Australian plans for the new season.
