“Keep an eye on”, “there will be conversations” – Romano shares latest on midfielder linked with a summer move

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at the club remains uncertain as reports suggest that Spurs are prepared to sell the Danish international in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Despite Hojbjerg’s decision to stay at Tottenham this season amidst transfer speculation in January, the club is aware of the need to offload the midfielder to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year when his contract expires in June.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided insights into Tottenham’s stance on Hojbjerg’s situation, indicating that there are no ongoing negotiations for a contract extension.

Romano stated that Spurs understand they will risk losing the defensive midfielder for free next season if they do not sell him at the end of the current season.

Interest in the defensive midfielder has been noted from various European clubs, with Lyon and Juventus among those making enquiries during the recent winter transfer window. However, no deals materialised.

Speaking on YouTube, he said:

“The Tottenham midfielder has signed with a new agency with SUG Italy . Atletico Madrid and Fulham came close to signing him in the summer, and in January he was in the list of Juventus and Napoli but nothing happened because Tottenham always said permanent transfer or nothing for Hojbjerg.

“We are entering into his final year of contract at Tottenham with his current deal expiring in summer of 2025, and so Tottenham know that at this point, they need to sell the player or lose him as a free agent. Because there are no negotiations over new deal at this stage.”

“So keep an eye on Hojbjerg because there will be conversations over potential summer exit.”

Under the management of Ange Postecoglou, Hojbjerg’s role has diminished, seeing him feature in 25 league matches but only start in 6. His playing time has mainly come as a substitute, often entering the field in the latter stages of games.

Despite seeking regular playing time ahead of the Euros earlier this year, Hojbjerg opted to remain with Tottenham for the remainder of the season to help them through an injury crisis.

As the summer approaches, Hojbjerg’s future remains uncertain, with Spurs poised to assess offers from potential suitors for the 28-year-old midfielder and the player keen on leaving as well.
