Report: Tottenham battling Man City, Newcastle to land Sporting’s £34M talent

By Eddie Razo -

Despite adding Rodrigo Bentancur this past January and awaiting the arrival of Pape Matar Sarr, the midfield is a position that Tottenham Hotspur wants to continue to improve.

There are plenty of targets linked to the north London club, and the latest is Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes. However, CM Journal reports that Spurs face stiff competition to land the 23-year-old.

Manchester City is willing to offer Sporting £34-million for the midfielder to replace the outgoing Fernandinho. However, they plan on waiting until the end of the season to submit a bid.

Furthermore, Tottenham and Manchester City aren’t the lone Premier League clubs eyeing the Portugal international, as Newcastle United is in the mix to challenge their domestic league rivals.

This season, Nunes has made 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants while scoring four goals and recording five assists. It will be interesting to see whether Spurs can beat out the two richest clubs in English football to land the young midfielder, but perhaps they can put forth a convincing bid.

According to Don Paratici, “it’s important to be in the race for important players”, even if we lose that race it’s still ‘important’. I would suggest if Citeh seriously want this player that they will get him.

I can see the club’s PR network attempting to repair the Diaz damage this summer, with these stores that we are set to outmuscle the likes of Citeh and Liverpool over certain players. The telling bit here is when they mention Newcastle at the end, leaving it to the imagination as to what extent the level of interest is from the top clubs. Possibly agent spun this.

He’s 23, fits the ENIC policy of refusing to sign anyone over that age who’s any good. More a Spurs or Toon signing than a Citeh one, their interest’ might be passing, although more likely mythical.

Don’t believe the hype…
