Report: Spurs ‘can soon begin’ talks to sign attacking midfielder; Reguilon could go the other way

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Tottenham Hotspur may soon begin talks with Atalanta about a deal for Ruslan Malinovskyi.

Malinovskyi has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham since the past few days, with reports claiming that Antonio Conte’s men are looking to sign the midfielder on loan with an option to buy.

Tottenham’s interest in the Ukraine international was also confirmed by Fabrizio Romano who also claimed that Marseille are interested in the attacking midfielder as well and are set to make an offer for him.

According to the report by TuttoMercatoWeb, Malinovskyi is on his way out of Bergamo because his relationship with Gian Pero Gasperini has soured. It also says that Spurs’ interest in the midfielder should be “carefully monitored,” and the Premier League club “can soon begin” talks with the player.

The publication adds that Tottenham could start talks by offering Sergio Reguilon to Atalanta as part of a deal to sign Malinovskyi.

The midfielder has 43 goal contributions in his last three league seasons, serving as a consistent source of attacking output for Atalanta – while also being capped by Ukraine on 49 occasions and scoring seven goals.

He might be a cheaper option compared to the likes of Maddison and Zaniolo but it would make much more sense for Spurs to go all out and sign Maddison who is not only Premier League proven, but has been consistently performing, and has started this season on fine form as well, with 2 goals and 1 assist in 3 games.

Puts our game against them last week in more context. We look a little lacking in energy so far.

Well, it’s not PEH and Bent. Maybe Skipp or Bissouma can be that guy for now until we bring someone in.

Yep..where are they though..

What we’re really missing is not so much an attacking mid but someone like Modric or Jorginho that can initiate the attack when we play out of the back.

I’m with you triple T. I don’t like the 343, especially with 2 CDMs. Like most I want a more attacking formation. But without the talent for it, we’ll just be another Leeds scrapping around midtable. Let’s hope this passivity is transient and as better players like Richie and Bissouma bed in we become more attacking.

I’m hoping Bissouma can be more creative than the others..though I do think PEH has a pass in him…depending on the movement in front of him. Would love to see Charlie start to see if his movement off the ball improves the midfield.

Chelsea did indeed miss some sitters; especially Havertz. He had two gilt edged chances which he missed. However; Sessegnon and Kane both missed one v one chances that were equally easy. It wasn’t a great watch for Spurs supporters and if we are all being honest; it isn’t the type of football Spurs supporters want to see.

Conte’s Tottenham team appear to be instructed and set up to not concede first and foremost. When the score is level Conte’s Spurs are happy to concede possession and counter attack. Only when Spurs have a two goal cushion, or the clock is ticking while we are losing, are any risks taken.

The 3-4-3 system often leaves the two Spurs central midfield players outnumbered and exposed. When Winks was playing regularly this became a white knuckle ride where Hojbjerg often appeared demoralised and short of ideas.

Since Bentancur, Skipp and now Bissouma have become available, to actually help Hojbjerg in the midfield scrap, it has become a bearable but sometimes uncomfortable watch depending upon the opposition.

Spurs could have done with AFC’s opening fixtures; particularly the away games, while the new players are integrating. Bournemouth will finish bottom, without some new players, looking at them last night.

There’s only so much Conte can get out of Dier and Davies. He’s pretty much maxed these guys out. Harry can play anywhere for anyone. Son has been dreadful so far we can all agree on that. Alls I’m saying is give Conte a little time to get more players in, and replace the deadwood. It’s happening, but in the end there might not be a cure for a cancer, only treatment.

Objecting to how other teams play or how long they have been together..and how long have Dier Davies Kane and Son played together basics like poor passing lack of movement are just that basics..
Hoofing our way to 4 don’t see it ..
Charlie and Peresic are assets..

Chelsea missed some sitters was the point ..if you chose to ignore what is written there is no discussion to be had..We are more tenacious no doubt but the notion that we turn it on second half or for the last 20 mins will soon be worked out …very Jose.
Wolves cannot buy a goal haven’t scored in 10 a win is a win..but I do not think we look very good.

I don’t hate Winks. He seems a good lad, has been at the club for donkeys. Injuries hurt him and made him more cautious, playing for 5 different managers in 5 years doesn’t help. He needs a change of scenery. I wish him well.

Agree. Conte’s pressers are very revealing. He doesn’t BS like Jose or say a lot of nothing like Poch. Yesterday he said the team started out playing the way they had trained, but then stopped doing this for some reason in the 1H. Then at HT they had a discussion and the 2H was much better. What this tells me is that (1) Conte’s no miracle worker – he can only do so much with some of these guys, and (2) a lot of bad habits are hard to break and sometimes players revert to the backward passing and defense-first nature instilled first by Jose and then again at the beginning by Conte so we could at least stop shipping goals.

Chelsea have played together in the same way for a few years now, have more talent and are a more polished unit. Yet we still nicked a point. Wolves are pretty much the Portugal national team, these guys have played together for years too.

Give Conte a little more time. I just hope he gets it and doesn’t get fed up with the nonsense upstairs.

He is better than Winks but so is my mum.

This player is very one footed. His right foot is hardly ever used to receive the ball, pass the ball or shoot. He is quite predictable and may struggle to replicate the goals and assists he gets in Italy.

For these reasons it would be a bit like re-signing Lamela.

He’s also 29 so he isn’t going to improve. The only way I see this happening is if it is indeed some kind of swap / loan deal.

This guy can only be a squad player at Spurs as part of a deal to get a non contributing player out of Spurs;

in my opinion.

I doubt this will happen.

Chelsea managed 3 attempts on target last week. Spurs had 5 attempts on target.

Both Wolves and Chelsea did not show enough quality to score goals. When Conte needed to change it up against Chelsea he did and Spurs scored.

My point is that Spurs appear to approach every game with a plan under Conte. The players know what they are supposed to be doing at any given time and most of them carry out their duties most of the time. When they fail to do this, as Sessegnon did last week and Son has done for the last 3 games, there are now credible players who can come in and offer something else.

Spurs are doing enough and have improved since the turn of the year.

I am highly dubious of this story and am much more inclined to believe that he’s going to Marseille. If he does sign for Spurs, I don’t believe that he is the type of recruit to really propel us in an upward trajectory. The problem is that for all the chat about what a great window we’ve had, is it really true? We still need a CB, Dier and Sanchez , between them, are liable to cost us a lot of dropped points during the season, a RB, Emerson and Doherty are not the answer and Spence is a Levy punt. We still don’t have a replacement for Kane, God forbid he should get injured, Richarlison is more of a substitute for Son or Kulu, but it is midfield where we struggle. Hjojberg and Bentancur are too similar, and in the latter’s case, he struggles when the game is played at real pace. Our ball retention is poor unless of course we are passing it sideways or backwards, which we do all too frequently. Most importantly, our transition from midfield to the front three is slow and cumbersome and is reliant on getting the ball to the WBs and herein lies another problem as they are inherently not good enough. Compared to our peers, we move the ball around far too slowly and it is in midfield that the main problem lies. Conte has instilled more backbone into the side, helped by the exits of N’Dombele and Lo Celso and hopefully Winks, and that is to be lauded but in all honestly, the football is turgid and Liverpool, City and Chelsea all look far more accomplished sides and dare I mention Arsenal who are improving rapidly. I didn’t enjoy the football under Mourinho and I can’t say that I am enjoying it anymore under Conte but then that’s the perennial question for some Spurs fans.

It’s the one touch two touch passing around our defence / midfield , I can’t tell the difference at the moment, that show how poor we really are . This is the tool used by both CFC and Wolves to open us up. Great to get a draw at the bridge but CFC should have at least 3 more and Wolves desperately need a proven striker , they cannot buy a goal atm.
The skills required for such football.. passing accuracy, movement, quickness of thought are things this Spurs squad do not seem to possess and that is not going to change anytime soon.
Added to this is the fact that the team needed rebooting at half time in both games we have played so far..Hopefully something clicks soon ..but so far we look like we are playing some sort of ‘old football’ too often .
A win is a win ..I would say right now we are winging it…( I rate Perisic and Charlie)

Perisic looks on a different level but he’s 33, it’s going to be a hectic season so he’ll be used sparingly. Sessingnon is obviously now his understudy but he really needs to do better in the bigger games.

Some people were going on about how great Wolves were 1st half but I thought we were as poor as we were against Chavski for the 1st half. Sitting off, lack of cohesion, our ball retention and also winning the 2nd ball looked abysmal. Like you say, these are problems we had last season as well and they aren’t gone.

For me, PEH isn’t the right player to partner Bentancur and vice versa, because of their tendency to sit off and inability to carry the ball forward to put he opposition on the back foot. Perhaps Bissouma will help but we really need a ball carrier in there or certainly one with a more attacking mindset. However, unless they possess the experience and the quality, then there’s no point…

Clearly. 2 goals and 3 assists in 128 Premier League appearances for Winksy.

It’s all relative. Is this guy better than Winky? Idk but I should hope so. If so, Ruslan in, Winky out. Next window we upgrade more deadwood, but it’s a dense forest at Spurs.

Top 4 will be difficult ..the players seem to need re booting every half time ..why we aren’t going for a proven playmaker A/M I don’t know….we will suffer without one.

I’m not sure what the objective is this season. I’m guessing that finishing in the top 4 will be the priority, the signings we’ve made doesn’t really step things up enough do anything really major beyond that. A domestic cup? Maybe but if we finish 4th and don’t very far in the Champions League, then big deal…
