Report reveals how Levy’s refusal to sit down for negotiations killed the deal for midfielder in the summer

By Mehdi Gokal -

Giovani Lo Celso continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona as the January transfer window edges closer.

Barcelona were keen on signing him in the summer as Xavi saw him as an ideal player to replace Sergio Busquets who left to join Inter Miami.

The Spanish giants reportedly even made a move for him in the summer but a deal could not be materialised.

Spanish outlet AS (via Sport Witness) has now shared details about their failed move for the Argentinean.

The report reveals that Barcelona were in contact with the player’s agent. However, Tottenham refused to sit down for negotiations, because Barca did not intend to ‘pay a single euro’ to take him on loan and wanted Spurs to pay part of his salary.

This obviously didn’t please the hierarchy at Tottenham, who killed the deal.

But Barcelona have renewed their interest in the midfielder with recent reports claiming that Xavi has personally requested the club to sign him in the upcoming window.

It remains to be seen whether they make a better offer to Spurs this time and whether Tottenham are interested in letting him go.

Lo Celso has started getting more minutes in the absence of James Maddison and is showing his worth to Ange.

In two of this last three starts he put on solid performances and also got himself on the scoresheet.

But he has only 18 months left in his contract and Spurs might get tempted to cash in on him if a good offer comes.

That being said, it will all come down to whether they manage to sign a midfielder or two next month.
