Report: Atletico Madrid has an interest in Tottenham Hotspur right-back

By Eddie Razo -

After only one season in north London, it seems as though Emerson Royal’s time with Tottenham Hotspur could be coming to an end. The Brazil international didn’t lock down the right wing-back position this past season, which is why Spurs are looking for reinforcements.

With the possibility of Royal exiting, AS reports that Atletico Madrid is keen on the right-back, who has plenty of experience in La Liga, having spent time with Real Betis.

The Spanish media outlet doesn’t detail what level Atletico Madrid is interested in the defender. Still, it will likely cost them €25-million, which is what Tottenham paid FC Barcelona last summer since the Premier League side probably wants to recoup their initial investment.

Royal made 44 appearances in 2021-22, scoring one goal and recording one assist for Spurs. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish club does begin discussions with the player and Spurs for a possible transfer this summer.

Atletico Madrid is also looking at Udinese’s Nahuel Molina, but the Italian club is reportedly asking for more than €30-million, so Royal could be their Plan B option.

Emerson is still young, more of a traditional RB than a wingback. Might be better suited to play right side in a back 3. Strangely for a Brazilian back he doesn’t seem to have that natural attacking instinct like Marcelo or Roberto Carlos.

I reckon we’ll move him on if Athleti can round up enough pesetas.
