Reguilon By The Numbers: Spaniard Shines Again For Spurs

By The Boy -

The acquisition of Sergio Reguilon this summer is looking increasingly like one of several stand-out buys by Daniel Levy, who thankfully now has a coach that he can trust when it comes to picking winners in the transfer markets.

Against Manchester City the central Tottenham ‘axis’ of Moussa Sissoko and Pierre Hojbjerg gently directed Manchester City down the wings and so both Sergio and Serge Aurier (about whom, more to follow) both found themselves very busy bees during their 96-minutes of play.

Reguilon made more interceptions than any other player on the park, diligently keeping City’s vengeful hordes, who came at him in wave after wave, at bay.

Defensively, Tottenham were immense, and part of this came in the highly disciplined manner our boys went about their work. Sergio notched up 8 recoveries, yet conceded just one foul.

The Spaniard’s passing accuracy reflected the ‘wild west’ conditions, but 74% is still respectable territory given the circumstances. To have misplaced the ball just 6 times in a midfield congested by opposition players was, no mean feat.

Don’t be f*cking daft. I’m talking about playing at the highest level possible playing with style and attacking intent most of the time.

Teams suddenly stop winning matches when they play any other way than Jose now do they? 😂

I think Klopp, Pep and many others have proven otherwise. Will you stop at nothing to defend Jose from a single ounce of criticism?

Agreed about Kane and Son. They are superb, but Kane always has been. Poch changed him from the greediest striker in history to being more reserved and team centred. Dropping deep for Spurs and being a 10 is not new, it was first done last season by Southgate. It worked well with Rashford, Sterling and/or Sancho.
As for football changing, the press was done in the 80s but teams just shouted ‘get tight’. Every amateur player has ‘squeezed’ the opposition at some time and kept them in the corner! Possession football has always existed, have you seen Leeds under Revie rip Southampton to shreds? Liverpool in the 70s and 80s were brilliant at it too. Agreed about being as good as your players and the teams that spend the most have the better quality, which makes it even more remarkable what Poch did. In hindsight Poch should have prioritised those cups, winning a cup is special, but because our squad was lesser than the bigger teams he prioritised the biggest prizes. I don’t mind that.
I didn’t mention Chelsea because they have never had any class. Granted their trophy cabinet isn’t bare but that is because of Russian mafia money, not a legacy. It all depends on whether you want to sell your soul to the devil for a piece of silver. If it’s the League yes, but nothing else this season will convince me.

At what point did I compare eras? Again, if you read my post in full rather than cherry picking bits out you’d know that.

I said from the start that it was a very different time. However this has no bearing on the style in which the game is played. You’re either Klopp or El Tel or you’re Jose or George Graham. All win trophies so the idea that you have to surrender style for trophies is utter bo**ocks…

If you only rate the PL title & CL title we haven’t got much to show for your tradition and “Spurs Way” of playing. Why should players staff and supporters be starved for another 60 years when time and football has moved on even if you can’t.

Everythings relevent. In fact Bill nic spent alot on big marquee signings at the time. Comparing money and football centuries apart is nonsensical.. The 60s were 60 years ago now. It’s like comparing the 1960s to the 1900s. Or 1890… Very different eras…. But still you touched on mentality which is the same. Winning. Bill Nic said Spurs must be the best in the land. Not second best. Not fourth.. He said a season without winning a trophy is a failure………. Whoopsie dooh Botch managed to win a match against a depleted struggling Madrid who were beaten by Granada the week before! Winning one match wouldnt make Bill proud. Winning a trophy would. The glory is in winning. There is no glory in losing…. Bill Nic is no way modern spurs. That time was closer to the wild west.

Yeah, it definitely came from the south Americans and latinos though.. Cheating is with no contact at all. The pussycats go down with minimal contact. Like they been shot. Cheating too any diving really… Unless its to avoid injury.

Your only as good as your players. The players bring the style in the end. We are still transitioning… You forgot to ask a chelsea supporter the importance of Mourinho 😉 .. The legacys of the clubs you mentioned are down to one thing. Winning… Klopps geggenpressing has always intrigued me, but this is a german thing. Not Paisley.. The game has changed alot since the 90s, never mind the 60s.. The way Kane and Son are operating in this system is a joy to see. Kane is reaping the rewards especially…. I care about all the cups mate. I care about every competitive game. There is an order with league cup at the bottom. Prem and CL is more important obviously the pinnacle.. The ropey league in the middle… I bet you Maureen cares for every cup… Levy won’t care much about those budget cups because theres no money in them. Botch was a fool to throw cups/games. And telling us all he was leaving if he won his pot. Lost alot of respect for him then. So did his players. Still tongue in a wise head.

I enjoy winning, so while we are winning I’m enjoying the winning part. If we stop winning there will be nothing to enjoy about it.

A 3-3 draw, goals and attacking football I would rather sit through than a 1-0 bore fest. Each to their own eh…

I think you’re mistaking me for someone who cares about insignificant trophies over the club’s traditions. The League Cup, FA Cup and Ropey are all nice things to win but at what cost if you’re going to go against the traditions of the club to win even those?

If it lead to a League win or a Champions League win then I’ll take a view on it. I understand where you’re coming from but only for the big prizes. If we aren’t winning those I’d rather have the better football myself…

Apparently on the back of the medals they hand out at the end of the season to the side that finishes top it only says WINNER & the year,no reference to style of play. So if your question was to the players,I don’t think they would care, they would probably be remembered as Legends in years to come by supporters as the first Spurs side to win a title in 60 years, and would have something to show their grandchildren that their years at Spurs wasn’t a waste of time.

They ALL give positive interviews & social media posts.

You ask a Man Utd supporter the importance of Busby, Liverpool fans the importance of Shankly. Those clubs demand their teams win but in a manner that follows those traditions established in the 60s. Fergie did it. The fans might have celebrated the Jose cup wins but they hated his style of football. You ask anyone of them. When Bob Paisley took over from Shankly he said he wasn’t going to change anything, only do it better. Why couldn’t Spurs do that after Poch? Probably because the numpties in the offices have no long term football strategy, but one purely invested in economics. We’ve effectively ripped up 5 years of work and started afresh. Liverpool looked at what Rodgers did and had the same Paisley mentality, we can do it better. Lo and behold Klopp turns up. The Anfield traditions are back leading English football. Our results are great, can’t argue, but they are not done in the Spurs way, which does mean something to me and many thousands of Spurs fans. When it comes to Spurs; Arthur Rowe, Bill Nick, Keith Burkenshaw are always talked about, Pleat, Tel, Harry and Poch get loads of mentions, always will. No one cares about George Graham and he won us a trophy. For Jose to outdo Poch he has to win the League or Ch Lg, it is that simple. Winning a League Cup won’t add up to much, he’ll be in the same bracket at George Bungy McBungface and Ramos and the FA Cup is so devalued no one cares Arsenal have won 4 in 6 years! Because they are not in the top 4 they are forever being labelled a club in crisis! In the 60s all cups mattered, now only 2 do.

If you’ve been reading my posts rather than jumping over my opinion, you will see that I am very happy that we’re winning matches under Jose.

So while that continues, as a supporter I will put any aesthetic concerns to one side, a win is a win. However Bill Nic was a different era, I used to see him in his last years driving around with his missus in a rusty old Ford Sierra. Jose has already earned more money at Spurs than Bill did in his whole lifetime

That’s not Jose’s fault, I’m just making the point that no matter what Jose might have won at other clubs, it’s irrelevant to the role Bill played for Spurs. He’s the godfather of the modern Spurs, the architect of our identity.

All others will forever be compared to Bill Nic, not just on trophies but the way we play. This is the way it’s always been, it was engrained in the concrete of WHL and should be transferred to the new gaff. Seamlessly if possible.

Spurs aren’t about trophies first style second and they never have been, mainly down to Bill. Keeping our identity is more important than trophies as far as I’m concerned.

If club’s identities become faceless, interchangeable and homogeneous then wtf are you left with? This is a fundamental and more important than a trophy, if it can’t be won with an element of style and swagger.

You’re right, I am a Spurs supporter, which is why I defend its traditions fiercely and won’t be lectured about ‘win first, style second’. It is of no relevance to me.

I feel slightly saddened by the willingness of a number of our fans choosing to turn their backs on all of that for short term gain.

People think i’m some sort of Poch obsessive and a Jose hater, I’m neither of the kind. I just know how I like to see those white shirts do their stuff. Poch fitted that and Jose doesn’t. I don’t hate Jose, he’s a great manager but I’ve never wanted that style of play at Spurs and never will.

By the way, we beat Real Madrid with swagger and no home ground. (Yes we actually won matches before Jose turned up!).

That’s the kind of Glory that would make Bill Nic proud…

Depends what we win, if it’s just the League Cup or Ropey League I’d rather not bother with it. It’s not Spurs.

And before people come back at me about ‘years of failure’ I’d remind them that has had more to do with the people at the top of the club than the management.

Secondly, if just winning trophies is your main priority, then why have these fans supported a club that has sated itself with playing a certain way and not trophies for decades? 🤔 😂

Why is winning any way possible suddenly totally acceptable at Spurs? Its hypocritical to go back on that in my opinion. We have an identity…

The same fixture last year was a smash and grab with the best team losing, but not this year, Mou outfoxed Pep and we 100% deserved the win. Besides most of those City shots were blocked a long way from the target and we could have scored more.

Only TWO stats are relevant from Saturday:
1. Goals scored = 2-0
3. Points won = 3-0

The “bossed the match” & “lions share of possession” & “dominant team” LOST the 2019 UEFA Champions League final –
Possession: 65-35
Shots: 16-14
on target: 8-3
Not sure too many Liverpool fans are unhappy!?

Bill nic was great. He should be knighted surely.. But the game has evolved loads since the push and run sides of the 60s.. 60 years ago now. Different balls, rules, far deeper tactics… I wonder what Bill Nic would make of Maureens personal trophy cabinet.. He’s won far more than Bill Nic and Spurs full history…. And there is more to come……. Watch our CL final again against the scouse. We had majority of possession.. They let us have the ball knowing we wouldn’t do much with it.. Then they hit us on the counter….. Its all very well having 60 or 70 per cent possession and 15 or 20 shots. But when most of the shots were from distance or blocked by 1 or 2 people then stats dont tell the whole story…… We looked far more dangerous and potent going forward with our 3 shots than city were all day with their 20 attempts… Top of the league, best goal difference in the league. And you’re here moaning about not stacking up. Fcuk me get a grip man…. Youre supposed to be a ‘supporter’ of the club..

Reg and Serge were immense. It was the manner in their recoveries. Thou shalt not pass… Dier and Toby were also great at clearing their lines. There was alot of crossing. Hope Toby recovers sooner rather than later. Great team effort all round defensively. And going forward we were clinical.. Deadly, ruthless.. Peps face was priceless.. Loved Maureen congratulating the boys at the end too. That one meant alot to him.

Below makes for sobering reading for any fan of attacking football, even if we did win. I wonder what Bill Nic would’ve made of it…

Tottenham V Man City

Liverpool had 20 more shots on goal in their win and the lion share of possession. “Yeah but we’ve had the possession and lost before” is the mantra. How often over the season does the dominant team lose? People are throwing up unusual outcomes of selected matches in the past and using it as an excuse for not bossing matches now. Doesn’t stack up I’m afraid…
