‘put some real money’ – Father of treble winner confirms he blocked son’s move to Spurs because Levy was too cheap

By Mehdi Gokal -

Jack Grealish’s dad has revealed that Tottenham tried to sign his son back in 2018.

The Aston Villa midfielder was subject of a £25m bid from Spurs, but Villa’s majority owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens swiftly blocked the move.

In a recent interview, Grealish’s father disclosed the details of Tottenham’s failed attempt to sign his son. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the offer, indicating that he believed the club was trying to secure Grealish for a meager sum.

He advised Tottenham to “put some real money on the table” and made it clear that he did not want to see Aston Villa lose out on a significant transfer fee.

Speaking with VG about Tottenham’s failed attempt to sign Jack Grealish, his dad said:

“I said (to Tottenham); ‘put some real money on the table.'”

“I didn’t want to see the club of our hearts robbed of money (so) I said; ‘no, Jack is not going’.

Something was not right. They tried to get him cheap. For a pittance. Maybe I was naive, but I said; ‘we’re not going’.”

Ultimately, the move to Tottenham did not materialize, and Grealish remained at Aston Villa.

However, just three years later, in a dramatic turn of events, Grealish left Aston Villa for Manchester City in a £100 million transfer deal, becoming the Premier League’s most expensive player at the time.

His subsequent success at Manchester City, where he has won multiple trophies, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, highlights the caliber of talent they missed out on.

This revelation raises questions about what could have been for Tottenham had they succeeded in signing Grealish back in 2018. Had Levy not been his cheap self then and dug a bit deeper, Tottenham might have signed one of the most talented English footballers of his generation.

Tottenham are now going head to head with Manchester City and Arsenal this season it seems. Spurs and Arsenal remain the only two unbeaten sides in the Premier League.

Spurs are currently top of the table, having played 8 games, winning 6 of them and drawing 2.
