Pundit says Bielsa will be good for Spurs but defensive problems could remain

By Bruce Grove -

Former Sunderland man, Kevin Phillips, admits that Marcelo Bielsa would be a fine choice if Spurs make him their next manager, but he questions the Argentine’s ability to transform their defence.

That has been a problem for the Lilywhites in recent seasons and even held them back in the current campaign.

The likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have been in fine form in the club’s attack and have been scoring the goals that should bring a trophy or at least a top-four finish.

However, the Lilywhites look set to miss out on a top-four spot again. One reason for that is because their defence just cannot stop conceding goals.

Bielsa’s Leeds team is one of the most exciting to watch, but they aren’t the best at defending and have conceded 12 goals more than Tottenham in this campaign.

Philips says Bielsa would be a good appointment and should excite the Tottenham fan base, but he questions if he would help them fix their long-standing problem at the back.

“With the style of play, you would certainly get entertaining football,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“Defensively, where Tottenham have had a problem this year, you would have a slight concern.

“That’s not a strength of Bielsa, Leeds go for it every game and Spurs fans would love that.

“But defensively you have to get the balance right. With his experience and the way he goes about his business, it’s a good fit.

“It’s not a no-brainer but if they were to get him it would be a good appointment.”

He wouldn’t be long term either, as he could walk out at any stage.

It makes no sense. Football always throws up unpredictability but the sheer volume of weird reenforces the suspicion I have of this Prem league. VAR also…

It’s bizarre. Every single team has had a monumental blip at one stage or the other. City started really slow, Liverpool just blew up, Chelsea were woeful under Lampard, Everton started great and are now incredibly inconsistent, fans and pundits were calling for Ole’s head in December, Arsenal have been in a permanent blip all season. Even Leicester yo-yoed for a few months.

I agree with Philips regarding our defence and I have question marks over Bielsa. Everybody is love-bombing Leeds because they have come up from the Championship and taken the league by storm but it is it trophy winning football? You cannot concede the amount of goals Leeds do and win trophies and Bielsa’s cabinet is as bare as ours in the last 20 years under ENIC. Yes they are exciting and good to watch but some of the punditry from the likes of Ferdinand and Neville has been quite condescending. ‘Look at Leeds 3 nil down and they just keep going, its great!’ If it was Utd losing thrilling games of football they’d be calling for his head. Leeds and Bielsa appear to have a good thing going, I think we should leave them at it for now. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up next season where teams will be a little more the wiser on what to expect from Leeds.

Harry, you put an important question up. How do you go to a meeting with people you’ve publically declared you despise and want out?

That is precisely why I suspect the whole thing is a controlled opposition from Levy/Lewis through the trust.

So monumental was the Wolves win H said it was West Brom…haha!

That’s about the size of it. It’s that meaningless it doesn’t even matter.

He’s never coming so I’m not sure why people are talking about it.

It’s bizarre that the team is 6th, they should be midtable or lower, only the blithering inconsistency of Everton, Arsenal and others have kept the team in the top 6. How Everton lose at home to Sheff Utd is anyone’s guess, and they’ve dropped alot more home points to inferior opposition. Are they allowing certain teams in Europe? Top 4 elite look fixed, maybe Europa is too?
