Kevin Phillips has admitted that he judged Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg too quickly and that the midfielder has surprised him.
Hojbjerg signed for Tottenham from Southampton in the last transfer window as Jose Mourinho looked to solidify his midfield.
The Dane was entering the final year of his previous deal at Southampton, and he wanted to join a bigger team.
Spurs finally landed him, but not every fan or pundit thought that they had made a good signing, including Phillips.
The former Premier League star has now admitted that he got it all wrong in judging the move when he wondered why Spurs were signing the midfielder.
He then admitted that he has seen now that the midfielder was worth buying and he had it wrong when he judged him at first.
“For me that was a surprise signing,” he told Football Insider.
“You do see it every now and then. I do not think I was the only one raised an eyebrow at that signing.
“Even Spurs supporters must have thought, ‘Who have we signed? What are we signing here? Are we really signing a player who will take us to the next level?’
“But credit to the player. I have watched him a lot this season and he is a quality midfielder.
“He surprised me so I take my hat off to him. You have to hold your hands up sometimes because you make judgements and you get it wrong. I certainly hold my hands up and say I have got it wrong.”
Hojbjerg has become one of Jose Mourinho’s main men, and the Dane will hope to keep his form intact and help the team compete for the Premier League title this season.
