Pundit names the two underrated players who are key to Tottenham’s recent success

By Eddie Razo -

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are the Tottenham Hotspur star duo many know and attribute to the squad’s success. The north London club is on the verge of finishing in the top four, and while many give the two credit for Spurs’ form, one former player is looking elsewhere.

During the segment on the Premier League Productions (via HITC), English football pundit Owen Hargreaves stated that it’s ‘impossible’ for Tottenham to be on their current without Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Hargreaves claims that the Spurs’ defensive duo in the midfielder are ‘reliable’ and adds that they’re the ones who ‘do all the work’ for the rest of their teammates to thrive.

“These guys do all the work for themselves because of the way Conte sets up with the back three and the wing-backs,” said Hargreaves. “They are reliable. They look across and know what they are going to get from each other.”

“They are good in every phase, not brilliant players. But Conte doesn’t want that. He wants functional players that work hard and are there for the balance of the team Bentancur and Hojbjerg do that brilliantly for this side because all eyes are on the wing-backs, on Kane and Son.”

Tottenham finds itself on the doorsteps of the UEFA Champions League, needing one point to secure that top finish as they take on a relegated side in Norwich City. Spurs have everything at their feet to make the end of the season a magical finish from they were earlier in the year.

Or we can play a creative mid, wingers and 2 high quality center backs with our wingbacks playing defense. When teams sit behind the ball, we do not have enough skill people in the final third. It is painful to watch PEH, Davies and the backline trying to add creativity to our offense.

Just remembered the 4 WBs we currently have. Ignore my idiotic statement above as it’s clearly impossible to find anyone competent in that area.

Surely we can scout a decent set of WBs that City don’t get!!

Lamptey I’m not sure about now as he picks up a fair share of injuries, rarely plays a full game, citeh will sign players just to stop other clubs improving.

Forget Cucarella if City want him.

He has become more confident in coming for crosses in recent games which is a positive..errors like those against Wolves need to be ironed out before he is truly world class.
I just feel without covering the basics the worldies lose value.

The all we need is to raid Brighton for Lamptey and Cucarella and I am in dream land!

Tielemens would be great as a creative CM, as would Neves, my dream would be Ward-Prowse, but I’m guessing that Levy won’t stretch to that! A player that knows the league and would not need time to settle would be massive.

Really. How did you manage to squeeze Winks in the mix.

He’s a really good player. Ball carrying, head and attention will get better, he’s the potential to be as good as a VVD

Contes systems are a 343 or 3412 in his ideal world which in attacking gives him the two wing backs and one cb into attacking positions with a 541 defensively.
one of the defensive mids need to do the attacking play as well.

I’m seeing the same. If PEH is caught out of position it’s always because he has to cover someone else’s ar*e

They’re both valuable players. I cringe at the thought of Winks playing the rest of the season instead of Bentancur. We’d play in the Conference again

Agreed, Romero would walk in to most teams at the present

Let’s add another CB of Romero’s quality. A playmaker is most likely the most crucial signing of the summer. We need a proper one, and Winksy out

PEH making errors show because of our poor wingbacks and the covering he has to do…in same way that Royal is becoming overrated and Sess is rated by some despite a poor last ball, far too often, giving the ball away too often. This is what our DM have to put up with…

They are largely underrated, especially PEH, away from Spurs fans, perhaps Saints fans too.But that will change once we’re in Europe I think.
But lets not get too carried away, there have been occasions this season when our 2 man midfield have been over-run. Having Skippy will help, but we need more specialised creativity there to break down defensive teams.

They are not underrated. They are doing the job they get paid to do. We of to accept our roles and do the job we are required to do. Go home, come back the next day even without a pat on the back ready to work. You look at successful teams. Fernando, does all the dirty work DeBryune gets really credit. Rodri now still Kevin gets the credit. That is taking your lunch pail to work which PEH does and once he gets out that zone all his warts start to surface.

Preach on. Even good results are broken down into….it is bottom feeders. Many find it hard to give our players credit, but rather look at the quality of the opponents to justify the doom and gloom. Every loss is amplified by I told you so. Many has stated they want us to finish out the race to teach Levy a thing, so Conte can walk. My take is we quality and hope Conte can change Levy. Sadly, until we win something you will have many here wrinting tomes of how dysfunctional we are instead of rooting for the front office to change its ways of recruiting. We have one more year with Conte which I always believe to see a transformation of the direction of the club football policy. Le’s hope.

A reality check there. We can’t break down teams that mount a low block on us as per evidence this season. We desperately need a playmaker, a striker to rotate and at least one attack minded WB who can actually cross. You can add a keeper to replace flapperlini too.

So how are you going to break down teams that sit behind the ball? Just a sample from this year alone on teams that will come at us while we play 7 defenders while we hit them on the counter.. Manchester City and United, Chelsea, and Arsensal. We cannot keep running 2 defensive mids out games after game unless we are going play the entire season 541 whether or not we play against the top teams. Make no sense to me. We need a creative mid and a striker/#10.

Hang on there , we’re starting to sound like a decent side !
Our club is unfortunate in that there IS an elite group above us and we will need to go to market to be able to take a further step up [baby steps] but we are improving , right ?

Romero is pretty much there already.. Hugo Lloris is undoubtedly world class.

Probably, on what we have seen so far, you can add Romero to that list.

Sadly we have a way of denigrating our players when , on closer examination , they appear to be a little better than initial thought .
In my mind we have one ‘worldie’ and a further two or three who are on the fringe of being able to play REGULARLY for MOST of the ‘bigger’ type clubs .
All in all , far from being the most derided squad ever , there is a nucleus that can help us toward being really competitive at the top table.
If manager and chairman reach even a halfway house with regard to possible market expenditure , then we have a chance and I hope Conte will be allowed to use any monies from sales of current on loan ‘stars ‘ .
I believe he is showing HIMSELF to be a great judge as far as ‘chaff’ selection and is ridding himself of such ……….. we’re in good hands C O Y S !

An attacking midfielder is a must ..not sure if Eriksen can cut it ..he will get clattered by our competitors…

I would agree with the article. If you include Skipp, we have 3 decent functional first team midfielders… which means we really need one more to cover for a heavy schedule next season. If Conte wants to use a 5-3-2 formation more often… we’d need 2 more quality midfielders (one should be a very ‘creative forward passer’

An undoubtedly under-rated pair, but make no mistake Kane and Son are the only world class players in our squad. I believe one day Romero will join that category.
