Predictably mixed reactions to Eric Dier Announcement

By The Boy -

Gauging the public’s mood by checking on Twitter is even less useful than one might have imagined. These fans had there say when it was announced that Eric Dier had managed to get contract extension over the line.

For me, this is a great deal and one that keeps a useful player at the club for another 4 years or so. Eric hasn’t had it all his own way at Tottenham, Pochettino was confused to know precisely where to play him, and one Mourinho found the right spot, the results were so good, that Paul Pogba had to resort to cheating to get the better of him recently.

With the gradual pensioning off of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen the need for a solid centre back had been on the cards for some time, and this is a pretty much perfect solution – especially given how long it has taken Davinson Sanchez to assimilate.

Eric’s commitment should be applauded, opposed to met with groans, but then I would say that, as I know what I’m looking at.

One of the first things Jose did was give Toby a new deal so I think he’s in his plans as the experienced campaigner in the back four. Serge is in his plans as the nutter..

Not on the occasions that he plays well!

Jose likes him, he lived in Portugal from the age of 6 and came to us straight from Sporting Lisbon so I can see the connection.

Dier was brilliant the season before we bought Wanyama and was scoring free kicks in the World Cup for England. Dunno what happened after that, possibly Wanyama put too much pressure to compete for the position? Who knows.

I still rate him but he needs confidence and it sounds like his illness f*cked him up a bit too. I like him, always have done since he scored against away at Wet Spam on his debut playing right-back. Time for him to kick on…

I like the things he has said, great attitude, I’m not convinced about him at CB.

He IS slow. Hi IS poor positionally, and fast players DO run rings round him. Hard to deny that. I rate him for the way he reacted to his people being in danger. Need dem kinda man by your side bredrin. He didn’t care about anything else. In that moment nothing else mattered. Big up yourself Eric. Got lucky with the contract son🌚

Most of the players weren’t responding to Poch at the end of his tenure, they had heard his take on things and weren’t motivated anymore, since Jose has taken over most of the interviews given by the players are of positive vibes and generally happy with Jose.

True, but after assessing his players Poch shipped Dier out of defence in his first meaningful transfer window.

I don’t think comparing our defensive record towards the end of Poch’s tenure is an accurate barometer here either. There were numerous other factors at work.

I’m not a Dier hater and acknowlege his commitment, but I’m not overwhelmed by his contract extension either. He hasn’t exactly showered himself in glory over the last couple of seasons. I think we can do a lot better in defence and midfield but would love to be proved wrong.

So if Dier had not picked up his ban do you think Toby would have played again this season?Because he was not getting a look in and Mourinho could see as well as us how the team was performing. Why didn’t he bring about the change before then.
I agree we’ve looked solid with Toby, but we always did, which makes Mourinho’s decision not to play him even more strange.I think at first the team was struggling with the manager’s system but like almost everyone after more games and building up fitness we’re looking better, but not great.

Poch was sacked after 12 games and only one clean sheet, who was the centre backs? Remind me I’ve forgotten.Poch played Dier when he arrived at Right back.

Very much like Michael Keane at Everton, before that Burnley. Surround him with support and he looks top draw. Expose him and he looks out of his depth. Pogba may well have took a dive, but no decent CB allows Pogba along the line. Less said about Sheffield Utd the better. I feel Dier has done better from this deal than we have.

Sadly I have to agree with this assessment. We’ve only looked solid at the back since Toby was reintroduced. One of the first things Poch did was moving Dier out of central defence which says everything.

Strange then how we’re now winning games and keeping clean sheets with Toby at the back. Seriously, do you lot even watch spurs? Dier is slow, poor positionally and fast players run rings round him. The Dier sanchez partnership was one of the main reasons we were getting turned over. Hes a, at times, good defensive mid. Thats about it.

Really pleased. He looks like he could be an excellent CB long term for us.

Its a good deal for both – but HH, you are far from innocent in piling on pressure for Dier, credit you though that you have let recent displays dictate your view rather than history. That said, had this deal happened 6months ago, would have been so happy?

He’s proven he can compete at Premier League level and there’s no guarantee any one bought from a Euro League can, ie Aurier. Plus his heart seems to be in the place and if his salary was doubled we’re still not over paying him for an International player with top four credentials and Champions League experience.

Great news 👏 getting players Jose wants on board ,signed up is a positive result. He was playing well in his proper position before the ban, also looking fitter. It would have been a shame to lose a player with his experience and attitude.

He was one of our better players following the restart. It would have been interesting to see if Mourinho would have given Toby any game time before the end of the season if Dier not been banned.
Certainly a useful squad player and quite possibly Jose’s preferred CB partnership with Sanchez going forward.Toby’s not getting any younger, much as I love him as a player. The question remains will Dier maintain his current form.

Dier has definitely improved since starting regularly at CB. If he can continue to develop and gain confidence he will serve us well. Needs to work on his concentration for the full 90 and cut out the crowd interactions.

Better at the back than in the middle. Error prone and slow, but solid enough
