Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero picked up an injury in the defeat to Chelsea yesterday.

The Argentine international defender had to be taken off 15 minutes into the game and Tottenham really struggled at the back after that. Despite being 2-0 up, they ended up losing the match 4-3.

All of the goals they conceded were scored after the departure of Romero. The Argentine international has been a key player for the club since joining them and another injury for him will be a sucker punch for Tottenham.

Postecoglou said to Football London: “Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing. He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn’t the one I was worried about, to be honest, but, you know, it’s just like I said, the way the season’s going for us unfortunately. So we just have to wait and see.”

The South American has struggled with injury problems this season and they need him to be available on a more consistent basis. Tottenham are already lacking in depth when it comes to the central defensive unit and players like Romero and Micky van de Ven have struggled with injury problems.

They need to keep their key players fresh to do well this season. They have looked quite vulnerable at the back in the absence of their key defenders. Tottenham are in the midtable position right now, and they will be desperate to secure Champions League qualification. They need to improve defensively to finish high up the table.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Romero can return to action quickly. Manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed that it is not a recurring problem and the player picked up a completely new injury against Chelsea. It seems that he has injured his toe and it remains to be seen whether he can return to action quickly.

Postecoglou added: “Romero didn’t injure the same thing. It’s a totally different injury, but also people I’m sure are aware of our situation. It’s not like I’ve got a multitude of options there, so, you know, you’ve got to make these decisions. Like I said, it’s not like Romero re-injured his toe, it’s a totally different injury, which could happen at any time.”
