Danny Mills claims that Jose Mourinho doesn’t trust Serge Aurier because of his lack of consistency.
The Ivorian has been a very inconsistent player since he joined Tottenham and that is one of the reasons why the club has signed Matt Doherty.
The Republic of Ireland international has come in and become the first choice at Tottenham.
Aurier, however, started and played the full 90 minutes of Tottenham’s Premier League game against Manchester City yesterday.
Like most of his teammates, the full-back did a fine job, but he is not capable of reproducing that kind of performance game.
Mills thinks that Aurier is fine as a backup player because he can be trusted to play some games, however, the defender just doesn’t have the consistency to play regularly for the club and that is the reason why Jose Mourinho doesn’t trust him.
He told Football Insider: “With Aurier, I’m not sure he has the consistency for Mourinho and that’s obviously why he has brought in Doherty.
“Mourinho likes good defenders in his side and he wants to be very very solid.
“Doherty was consistent for Wolves, every single week he was fantastic. He’s brought him in for that high level of consistency more than anything else that’s what he wants.
“Aurier I think is a good backup, he can certainly do a job in there. We’ve seen some very good games we’ve seen him have some not so good games. It’s just that consistency level that Mourinho doesn’t quite trust.”
I think Mills should just shut it.
Spurs have 2 good rotating fullbacks.
That is really it. It would be kind of nice if people would stop stirring up needless sludge.
Given the choice of Doherty at his best or Aurier at his best, currently, I’d take Serge.
Jose thinks different than you Doherty had started 6 PL games out of the first 8 this season Aurier only started in the ninth game against City because Doherty was ruled out with covid. Doherty 6 Aurier 3 How does this make Aurier first choice in the PL? In the summer AC Milan offered £13m for Aurier which was £9m short of the £22m Levy was demanding,Jose was willing to sell Aurier and replace him.Two weeks later Levy brought in Doherty for £15m and Aurier has stayed to fight for his place. Quite a few on here were calling out Levy for asking £22m and saying just take the £13m and move on. Aurier is improving under Jose which is only a good thing,he hasn’t lost in the PL in the three games he has played but was part of the defence that imploded against West Ham,in the final 10 mins.He also played in the ropey defeat to minnows Antwerp.
My guy power serge. I like him. better and better he’ll get. He ain’t gotta worry about Doherty
Doherty is a right back with experience hes played there majority of his 10 year plus career for wolves and also other clubs. Nuno Santos has only been at Wolves 3 years, I’m not sure how long hes been rocking with that formation but he was in the championship for his first year. Dohertys Ireland appearances for the youth and seniers were at right back too… He’s 28 he knows how to play there. Needs to find his wolves form…… Being a right wing back and playing right back in Joses usual system is pretty much the same thing. He likes both his full backs to bomb forward with the two centre mids or wingers tracking back to cover them. We frequently see Hojberg and Sissoko at left back and right back covering for them…. Its also why Sissoko is trusted mate. Lo celso I’m not sure is up to do that job defensively.
If Aurier wasn’t trusted then he wouldnt have played just now against city! No logic danny boy.
No, Maureen wanted at least two fighting for every position… Aurier is first choice playing in the prem. Docherty will be in the ropey. Aurier is pipping him to first choice at the minute with his performances. Docherty needs to improve his game to dislodge Aurier .. Davies and winks and Dele should also be in the ropey on thursday.. The second string boys with points to prove need to up their game on thursday. Can’t be losing to those lot again.
Aurier has looked the best in an attacking sense so far for me. Both are prone to giving away free kicks and pens. Not sure Doherty is a massive upgrade on KWP based on what I’ve seen so far, but he’s still settling in and will likely get better.

As long as Aurier & Doherty can defend properly, competition between them is only a good thing.Reguilon is more on Robertsons level, let’s hope he enjoys success at Spurs and wants to stay even if his team Madrid come calling.
Was expecting more from him going forward, the fact Aurier has had epic showings against utd and city defensively means we currently have 2 ok-ish right backs but I agree that Doherty has the potential to get better over time. He’s taking too long for most fans’ liking given his experience of the fast-paced and competive PL, I think you’re right that he might not have the pace to get up and down the wing to attack and defend with class like Regulion.
Last season we used Aurier more for delivering crosses than Davies as he was better at it,hence most attacks came down the right. This season Reguilon is our best outlet and you find he is the one delivering the crosses. We can only have one of them forward at a time to provide enough cover in defence unless you play with three centre backs like Doherty has been used to at Wolves. We have Bale on the right now so Doherty can concentrate on keeping goals out at the back and Spurs have only let in six from open play. It’s strange that we are top of the league having scored 21 goals in 9 matches but you are finding fault with a right backs attacking prowess.
In attacking areas where he’s supposed to be at his best he’s been pretty poor giving the ball away and not delivering quality. Hopefully that changes but how long does he need?
That’s simple if you want a PL quality proven Rightback with experience go out and buy one, don’t buy a wingback and ask him to play a different role and expect instant success. Spurs have the best defence record so what are you expecting if Jose’s style of football is the opposite of what he has been used to playing at Wolves for the last ten years.
The whole point of buying a proven PL quality player was to avoid the need for a bedding in period like what we’ve seen with Hojberg (the Everton game aside). If Doherty can’t pick up some decent form over the upcoming busy winter/Christmas period I’m worried he isn’t the sort of player we needed in the first place (past his prime?). Hopefully he sorts it out asap and starts putting in some consistent 7+ out of 10 performances instead of his usual 4 or 5 out of 10 which we’ve seen so far.
He hasn’t been played in the same position at Spurs,he played wingback at Wolves with three centrehalf’s.He doesn’t make the same mistakes that Aurier was guilty off last season. He played a huge amount of games last year starting with EL Qualifiers in July.He has to be given time to get used to his new position, teammates and manager before we can judge him.
What Mills is missing is the fact that Doherty just hasn’t reproduced his Wolves form for us.And that is a worry.
