Pinch Punch: 43 Days Later And Daniel Levy Has Yet To Hire A New Manager

By The Boy -

A cursory glance at football news reveals a veritable managerial merry-go-round with a healthy number of big names being linked with just about all and sundry. Tottenham Hotspur has presumably been busy behind the scenes, but already it is difficult to believe so much time has elapsed since José Mourinho was sacked.

It was reported a while back that some London clubs were considering a Charity Event after the Euros in an attempt to heal the rift between clubs and fans after the European Super League debacle. That would be scheduled for perhaps the third week in July. A type of preseason, if you will. Will Spurs have a coach in place for this?

No stadium sponsors, another trophy-less season, Harry Kane tipped to be wanting out, and the thought of this third tier of European to look forward to next season… are there any positives to present to the world right now?

With big-name coaches such as Conte and Zidane currently out of work, it seems a real puzzler that such a brilliantly run club appears to be drifting aimlessly, eh?

Lovely little story though.

I think it is fair to say Levy hasn’t got the man he wanted, probably Nagelsmann. With no shortage of managers to pick though I just ask why would anyone come to us? Mourinho had apparently £15m reasons, but would Conte, Zidane, Sarri, Rodgers or any of the international managers preparing for the Euros want our poisoned chalice? I am not convinced.

Unless Levy changes his MO our next patsy will receive a shed load in wages and severance payments, but have the black X against his name. Even Aurier, arguably one of our worst performing charlatans wants out. What hope is there?

Our squad is not good enough to offer an incoming manager any hope of success, therefore is a Graham Potter a better bet? He is a good coach, has played great, entertaining football, but his overall results have been poor. This is Brighton though, but like Southampton under Poch. Would he do better with a mismatched bunch of prima donnas because there appears little evidence of cohesion present? Why would Potter want to come to us?

Spurs are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can’t see a good coach improving us that much, not even Bielsa. Levy will not be giving anyone £150m, unless our best player leaves, so where are we headed? We appear rudderless, waiting for something magical to happen (and the ESL is not happening at the moment). Our plan used to be to buy quality young players, steadily improve as a team, sell them and repeat. Not anymore, unless Jack Clark, the wrong Sessegnon brother and Bergwijn are anything to go by. Even Ndom and Lo Celso are turning in to very expensive non-entities.

There are many successful football models to follow, but Chelsea seem to hit the nail on the head more often than not. Having good players in the squad is the be all and end all. Good managers can work with good players, simples! If it doesn’t work out, get another manager, but keep buying quality. Results will come. Lampard was allowed to buy Mendy despite having spent a world record fee on Kepa. That is called being brave and not settling for second best. Would Levy ever do this for Ndom, a player who had a worse first season than Kepa? Would Chelsea have let Aurier fester as their only decent right back? I hate Chelsea but admire how Roman goes about his business, and he would not be over 40 days in without a plan. I dare say they know who will replace Tuchel.

The fact that there are no takers so far for the managers job is not at all surprising for many reasons-here’s 3; 1, the longer the vacuum exists the more money Levy saves on salary (43 days and counting wow that’s well over £1.5m saved already chuckles off stage). 2, the longer the “apparent” difficulty in finding anyone to take up the post the more likely gullible fans will accept whoever is finally “preferred”-it was SO difficult to match up the clubs and managers DNA’s-a great way to manage expectations. 3, the knock on effect is obvious, no time to buy in said preferred managers preferred players, no pre-season to speak of so what do you all expect in terms of results actually on the pitch? What with the Euros, the new Beta variant virus, we will have to be patient and wait until the next window for the re-build to begin. Levy doesn’t rush things after all. We arrive at January 2022, a time Steve Hitchen dreads and you might guess the rest.

But this is where we are, you would imagine the phones would not stop ringing with so called top managers and coaches trying desperately to get the job, but they’re not.

I get it now. just reading Bent’s interview on Wandy Ramos. He said when he took apple crumble off the menu he lost the dressing room (not just that but final straw).
I see now the culture has been pampered for too long. Poch changed it for a few seasons but it crept back in.
btw Darren you can make the bloody stuff at home or buy it from M&S.

a close friend, an American had a heart attack sitting on the beach with his very rich girlfriend, she summoned a private plane that flew to the island and airlifted him and his girlfriend a 45-minute flight to the American mainland hospital – the plane crashed into the sea killing all on board. and this I believe is the situation at spurs – we have had the heart attack the plane is meant to be coming , but will it crash into the sea next season- the only thing keeping spurs fans in the air is all the bullshiit rumours put out by pundits and press. I consider our situation is far more serious.

It’s not a case of Levy failing to appoint a new manager.

It’s more the case when the phone rings and said managers see his name they cancel the call and block his number.

The solution to resolve all current issues would be to appoint Kane as Player Manager. Increase his salary and give him a 20yr contract.
That way any failure to win trophies will be placed firmly on his own shoulders!

Two years ago, after playing in The Champions league Final: Poch: We need to refresh the squad, and maybe we can go one better and win some trophies. Levy: Nah, f&$k that, lets create an absolute mess and convince our fan base that we don’t give a flying f&*k about the actual footballing side of this ‘Club’… I honestly 100% cannot see anything past that statement. Even Serge Aurier wants to leave !!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Perfect quote for Levy… with the ‘Spurs Bus’ hanging over the edge of the cliff: “Hang on a minute, lads. I’ve got a great idea.”

Who knows what goes in behind the scenes when looking for a new manager but we aren’t exactly overrun with quality applicants, which tells you something. No top manager worth his salt will come near us, which leaves the upstarts who Levy can control: Potter, Parker etc. Or we could end up with the Mason & King combo, now wouldn’t that be fantastic.

Being a contrarian by nature, I feel that things cannot get much worse and I just wonder if the proverbial rabbit is going to be pulled out of the hat at the last moment. It is hard to see how things will turn out but when things look at their worst, they frequently turn. Probably wishful thinking but you never know.

As some have rightly pointed out, this is indeed a perfect storm and levy is flying around in his tin boat.
As Michael Cain said, “some men just want to watch the world burn”. That’s sort of how I feel about the whole thing

It could have been Kane and Grealish plus a revamped squad hitting the heights of Glory, for Spurs. It will be Kane and Grealish … and a cool squad grabbing glory for the Citeh… and back at the Lane a two bob manager will lead a bunch of Instagram stars to mid-table.

What we are witnessing is a “perfect storm” of Levism. All his enormous howlers converging in one gigant cloud of utter incompetence. No manager, sponsor or potential signing with half a brain cell would be caught dead in our debt infested “world class facilities”. Where from here? Hopefully not the Championship.
