Paul Merson has given his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of making the top four this season.
The Lilywhites finished fifth in Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign in charge. Despite that representing a massive improvement, they blew multiple opportunities to leapfrog Aston Villa in the final Champions League spot.
Postecoglou has a clear mandate this season to return Spurs to the Champions League but all is not well.
Despite taking the lead and seeing their opponents go a man down in the final 10 minutes, Spurs were lucky to take a point at home to Fulham last time out.
That means the memorable 4-0 victory over Manchester City is Tottenham’s only win in their last five across all competitions, while they haven’t won back-to-back Premier League games since September.
Spurs face a difficult trip to Bournemouth next and despite only taking seven points on the road so far this season, supporters will be demanding a win.
Paul Merson makes Tottenham top four prediction
BBC pundit Chris Sutton has already predicted a 2-2 draw for Spurs in that fixture.
Now, former Arsenal and England star Merson has looked a little further ahead to cast serious doubt over their Champions League credentials.
“I don’t think Tottenham are favourites to finish in the top four this season,” said Merson (via TBR).
“I expect Manchester United to get it right under Amorim at some point, even though they have a lot more to work on.
“Manchester City may be struggling, but you’d be shocked if they don’t finish inside the top four.
“I expect Arsenal to remain consistent and then you’ve got Chelsea, who also look good at the moment.
“It will all come down to consistency in the end. But I just don’t think Tottenham hold the edge over Chelsea as things stand.”
