Paul Merson claims 51-yr-old is ‘going to be appointed the manager of Tottenham’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is going through a difficult period right now with his side struggling to hit top form.

The Londoners find themselves out of every cup competition so far and they are unlikely to win a trophy this season.

Conte is under a lot of pressure because of the poor performances of his team and the Italian has been linked with a move away from the club as well.

The 53-year-old will be a free agent in the summer and Tottenham have not managed to extend his contract.

Former Arsenal star and popular pundit Paul Merson believes that Daniel Levy needs to act quickly and bring in Mauricio Pochettino as Conte’s replacement right now.

Merson believes that the Argentine manager could lift the spirits around the club and help them finish in the top four.

Merson added that Pochettino is going to be appointed as Conte’s replacement and therefore it makes no sense to wait for his return until the end of the season.

He wrote on The Daily Star: “Mauricio Pochettino is going to be appointed the manager of Tottenham in the summer, so why not get him now? There is no point messing about.

“What’s the point in keeping Antonio Conte, do you want to get in the top four or not? Spurs have just gone out of two competitions and it’s now been 15 years since their last trophy.

“Some of the teams that have lifted silverware during that stretch such as Wigan and Swansea for instance are not even from the same planet as Tottenham. Leicester have also won the Premier League and FA Cup, it’s crazy. I really don’t like to see managers get the sack as they are humans but at the same time you’ve got to shake things up. I would do it now. Spurs are a big football club and are currently going nowhere.

“For me, Pochettino should come on board as soon as possible. He could lift the players in the race for fourth and it also gives him time to prepare for next season. It’s such a win-win as Conte no longer looks like he wants to be there anymore.”

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham are prepared to dismiss Antonio Conte right now and bring in a replacement.

Pochettino did an admirable job at Tottenham and help them challenge for the league title and the Champions league.

The 51-year-old will feel that he has unfinished business at the London club and the opportunity to manage them once again is likely to be a tempting proposition.
