“Out of his depth” Nuno Santo is on the verge of losing the Tottenham fanbase

By Bruce Grove -

Yesterday was a bad day for Tottenham and the first-half display against Arsenal was one of the worst performances that we have seen in many a year and the fanbase are not a happy bunch and who can blame them?

Picking the bones out of what went wrong is a huge task for Nuno Espirito Santo but not everyone is convinced that he has the ability to do that.

In all fairness to the former Wolves boss, there are a few that do not blame him, they point to the International break debacle, the Harry Kane situation, Covid and so on but it is fair to say that the vast majority just want him gone.

Daniel Levy, ENIC, Fabio Paratici, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele have also come in for some serious criticism as well, but it is the Portuguese gaffer that has come in for the brunt of it.

Nuno has accepted a lot of the blame and he should, he did get it wrong clearly but the question has to be asked, what other manager could come in and work under Levy and Paratici as well as a few very unhappy and disgruntled players and do any better?

Personally, I feel it is more of a structural problem now at Spurs and not even Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola could turn this ship around as things stand right now, but that is just me, for the most part, it is Nuno getting the blame.

Alasdair Gold stuck up a Tweet this morning highlighting an article he wrote on yesterdays performance and as per usual there was no shortage of responses and as you may have guessed already, most were negative, here is a small sample.

The fact that we have sunk to the point where a manager like Benitez is the best we can hope to get, and not get, is pretty hard to process…

Nobody can steer this ship. Nobody. He had failed by walking through the door and signing a contract. The iceberg was hit long ago, it’s too late now for anyone to stop the sinking. Knowone would touch it now anyway. What did you expect Nuno?

Dier and Alli have one thing in common – they were two of Levy’s cheap punts. Both have seemingly come back to haunt him.

Even a deeper lying number 10 but yes, we’ve played 4231 which has been the main formation for years. Why change it now?

We are a big club in a big mess. It needs a big name with clout to even square up to the challenge. Nobody like that wants to touch it xx with a barge pole.

When a manager like Potter says he didn’t want to risk his reputation working for Levy then you know your chance of getting a big name is pretty much zero.

Levy has poisoned the club with his endless sh*t, the man is actually an idiot.

He’s clearly not fit to be managing this club. That said, look at his squad. The same parasites who threw 2 great managers under the bus. Nuno has to deal with Dele, Ndombele and Dier all day. I’m surprised Mourinho didn’t end up in a mental hospital or a prison. We’re fecked. He’ll be sacked before Xmas and the only viable option is to get Redknapp back. At least he has that fire. At some point Levy needs to crawl and beg for Poch to come back and sign the freaking players he want. Poch wanted Fernandes. Jose wanted Dias. Only a complete moron can’t see the reality of the situation.

This all stems back to Scholar. Never mind ‘what have we won since ENIC’, what have we won since 84? Three trophies in 36 years. We had won three trophies in FOUR years prior to 1985. Scholar was one of those pushing for the Premier League but sadly ruined us just in time for it to start, and we’ve played catch-up ever since. It could have actually been worse, but now we are in a weird place where we look like a big club and have rubbed shoulders with the others but are ultimately pretenders. That’s why other fans goad us about lack of trophies. They don’t do that to the 99% of football clubs who don’t win because they are in their correct place in the hierachy, just that we have all the appearances of one of the giants but due to all the factors have landed in a kind of football limbo. Not one thing nor the other.

This could almost become a blessing in disguise, Arsenal think they are great, on the other hand we know we have serious issues with both players and manager, the fact they battered us yesterday simply
showed us to be leaderless on and off the pitch which might just be the thing that makes Levy realise without the right funding we are not going to compete even close to the European places let alone CL

So in short does this make ENIC invest in the squad and a capable manager, that with due respect Nuno is not, or we become cannon fodder and very quickly because the one thing widely stated that i don`t agree with is that the club do not want success, of course they do why would they not, one thing surely feeds the other and i suggest if they do not then simply sell the club to someone who does

Remember even under poch this team were letting him down. Last few months under poch were a disaster. Starting from the trashing at home against Bayern Munich.

Skipp & PEH have to start in every EPL game…there is no one else in the sqaud who can tackle, and have 90 mins in their legs…. we probably need to revert to Mourinho esque type football & concede possession… we simply arent fit enough to track runners & close down the opposition.. Mourinho knew this & was hounded out for it….

The truth is the stadium is a game changer but perhaps not for all the right reasons. Loss of revenue from success in football through entry into European competitions can now be made by boxing, NFL and concerts. This will increasingly lead to less investment in recruitment if that was possible.
When Lewis and his lackey bought the club from Sugar was the worst day in its history.

Yep totally agree, the team picked didn’t make sense….unless Nuno is trying to get sacked!!

Perhaps he’s disillusioned with it all, does come across as a forlorn figure.

Hopefully at the next two home games this week fans will vent their anger at the owners.

The sad fact is that enic don’t need success on the pitch or even CLfootball any more. The stadium events and NFL will replace those lost funds.
The might sit up and take notice if we flirt with relegation though.

We cannot afford to believe Nuno is the right man if only given loads of time and money. There is nothing to suggest he is. Just admit it was a disastrous appointment and get someone like Potter in.

Nuno was an entirely inappropriate pick no matter how few managerial options were remaining. A Wolves colleague of mine said Spurs’ performance at Selhurst Park recently was the kind of football they had been watching for over a year and that they had wanted him sacked much earlier.

He will be gone soon enough obviously but the disturbing thing is that he was the choice of Paraticci, no doubt on the basis that they are both members of the Jorge Mendes gang. When Nuno goes Levy must remember who insisted he was the right man and send Paraticci away in the same taxi with Nuno, ala Ramos-Comolli. Unfortunately Levy is somebody who takes an eternity to accept he has made wrong appointments, so I fear Paraticc is still going to be here for years forcing other awful timewasters on the club

They might have been a Poch team but the coaching and tactics are down to Nuno, no getting away from that.

It all comes down to our lousy recruitment, often buying 2 or 3 average punts instead of buying real quality. Ironically N’Dombele was a big buy, but still a punt. For that money we should have bought a player that was established. Why do we keep doing this? We’re the only club that seems to perennially mess up in the transfer window. The buck stops with Levy.

Skipp & PEH had to start in the middle… any other combo meant defeat much sooner than is normally the case…

He may be out of his depth but you’ve got to feel for the man. Bar Hoijberg and Reggie that starting 11 yesterday was a Poch team, two managers ago! He’s not even allowed bring in his own players and has to deal with jam tomorrow prospects or players who are not ready being foisted upon him.

Tanguy cant play 1 game in a week let alone 2 in 3 days…. we normally lose games in the last 30 cos we’re gassed in the middle of the park…yesterday it was the first half but the same reason…🤣

4-42 with Romero in midfield as he can spot a pass and tackle.

My team – gets all the best players on the pitch at the start.

Worse still put N’Dombele in midfield to break down defences then bypass him with long punts up to the front – 36% of our forward balls bypassed our midfield??

Rob

Pick the slowest midfield known to man and wonder why we got overrun. The formation works about as much as our players do. That midfield 3 has got to be dropped until they can at least move and cover some ground. Our wide players can’t create so go with a back 5, push the full backs on and get Son and Kane up front as a pair.

The last three league performances would all have ranked as in the five worst performances under Jose…he’s in big trouble.

Most of the players have effectively downed tools it seems, and the fans aren’t seeing Nuno as the sort of coach to shake them out of it or inspire them.

Nothing against him, he’s a bit low energy and lacking charisma for a high profile appointment, but I’m sure he has his talents. Not sure we’ll see much of that now, he’s already running out of time.

Harry

He looks such a forlorn person on the touchline, no energy or motivation for the players to encourage them.

The team picked yesterday was terrible, midfield was non existent, should never have played 433

Should have played 4231 and if he is going to persist with Dele then play him as a number 10 and nothing else.
