Opinion: Winks Needs To Adapt To Survive At Spurs

By The Boy -

Harry Winks’ struggle to truly breakthrough at Tottenham began some time before José Mourinho was appointed as Tottenham coach.

Under Mauricio Pochettino an uncomfortable combination of injury and perhaps tactical confusion did nothing to cement the now 23-year-old’s place in Spurs starting XI.

Now, Charlie Eccleshare for The Athletic suggests that the Englishman could be reviewing his situation.

Scrutinizing every ball the boy has kicked in the sporadic appearances Winks has made over the last few seasons is unlikely to provide us with the whole picture. Winks isn’t a bad player, by any estimation.

Arguably, Harry’s biggest problem is fitting into the somewhat chaotic jigsaw puzzle that has become Spurs’ current squad. Where exactly, is Winks’ preferred position? And then one must factor in his teammates.

It looks (from the outside, at least) easier to fashion an effective midfield without him. The Sissoko/Winks axis has failed to impress. With the arrival of Lo Celso, the landscape looks even more crowded.

The truth may well be that Winks needs to adapt in order to survive in N17. It feels ambitious to believe Mourinho or anyone else for that matter is likely to build a side around him.

The hope was he would develop into a pirlo style cm with assists and goals in him.. Hes more ryan mason. Time is running down for him now he needs to be playing or loaned out for game time.

his passing and movement is very good, I honestly think he will be better than most English players in that role.

I cannot buy into ‘He will be amazing’, he is a nice lad and thats where it ends. He is not good enough.

Its very hard to see what Winks offers, sadly he seems to prefer a simple pass sideways or backwards, his defending and positional sense in defensive duties is very poor and his long range passing is hard to judge (due to point 1). So he doesn’t fit well as an attacking midfielder, a deep lying orchestrator or a defensive midfielder. So the question I have struggled with for a while is…what is he? I personally think he is a deep lying Orchestrator (ala modric) who has been shackled for so long to ball retention that he has lost confidence, sadly though only he can fix that, and even if he does, historically that role does not fit in the Jose model, especially with the fact Toby can do that role and be a defender. I fear Winks needs to go to realise full potential, and we will regret it as he will be amazing.
