Opinion: Three Depressing But Plausible Striking Options That Remain For Deadline Day

By Joe Fish -

There is always a surprise on transfer deadline day, although not for the best part of a decade at Tottenham.

So I say we’re due, and we need a striker. And I’m not saying I’d take anyone, but I have checked the dates of the Mexican season to investigate the chances of a Vincent Janssen loan.

Here are three striking options who are more plausible, but almost as depressing, as the clock winds down…

Christian Benteke

The Sun reports we’ve been offered the 29-year-old target man this month with Crystal Palace having brought in Cenk Tosun to lead their own line.

The once-prolific Belgian has suffered a case of the yips and has only scored one Premier League goal since the start of last season. Jose Mourinho is a big fan though, describing him as a “special player”, as The Sun details.

Roy Hodgson may want to bring in another attacker to be comfortable letting him go and are after Yannick Carrasco, according to Standard Sport.

Willian Jose

I’ve never seen this bloke play and I will jump out of my seat if Jim White announces him as a Spurs player tomorrow. That is where we’re at.

The 28-year-old Colombian has 53 goals in 130 games for Real Sociedad but hasn’t played in their last three matches after going on strike amidst talk of our interest. Sky Sports reports that he’s also been touted to Manchester United so seemingly the La Liga outfit are happy to get rid of the rebel.

Salomon Rondon

A new name to throw into the hat. The former West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United forward is currently with Chinese side Dalian Yifang, who aren’t going to be playing any time soon as the Chinese Super League season’s February start has been postponed because of the Coronavirus.

Between the threat of a painful death and the new salary cap restrictions imposed on the big-spending teams, players are going to be looking for a quick route out of China, and Rondon fits the bill as a short-term No.9.

The 30-year-old scored 11 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season.
