Opinion: Spurs Must Be Able To Do Better Than Crystal Palace Ace?

By Joe Fish -

Crystal Palace have offered Christian Benteke to Tottenham Hotspur as a possible solution to our striker crisis, according to The Telegraph.

Matt Law understands that Palace have made Spurs aware of Benteke’s availability and that we are yet to rule out moving for the Belgian as we assess potential options to come in as cover for Harry Kane in January.

I would have loved us to sign Benteke on the back of his Aston Villa form. He was an unstoppable aerial weapon who scored at better than one in two.

But he has turned into a real life Rufus Smalls since leaving the Midlands.

“That Rufus Smalls couldn’t hit the side of a Renault Espace”

He flopped at Liverpool and has only found the net once in his last 34 games for Palace, although 21 of those have been as a substitute – a return so poor that the Eagles have brought in Cenk Tosun on loan from Everton.

If he was what’s left 10 minutes before the deadline, I’d say yes. He could perform the same role as Fernando Llorente did last season, perhaps more effectively now that we have a manager more suited to that direct style.

But please don’t let it come to that.

We haven’t declined Palace’s offer yet, but we haven’t accepted it either which gives me hope we are working on something more substantial.

Yes, a sh*t club, with a vile history of horrible racist fans, but
unfortunately with an owner who is a genuine football fan and actually likes to win things. On which subject, I am reminded of our two most famous mottos, oft quoted, which are “To dare is to do” and Danny’s famous quote, “The game is about glory … etc”

It is bitterly ironic, is it not, that Chelsea have an owner that has consistently embodied those famous sayings, in the ownership of that club, whilst we have an ownership that merely pays lip service to them and emblazons them on the public concourses, as a PR exercise, whilst willfully ignoring them in practice.

Just for the record, Chelsea, in 15 years under Ambramovich, 16 major trophies won (including 5 league titles and 3 European trophies) plus 7 FA Youth Cups, Spurs in 18 years under ENIC, 1 league cup. A painful, but regrettably wholly true, picture of the point I am illustrating.

You’re right. He could attack a ball wicked with his nut at villa. Put it near or nearabouts and he’d get on it.

I remember spurs fans screaming to pay whatever for him before he went to liverpool. He only works if you play wingers that can cross a ball like Beckham. Past his best and not worth even a free loan. By the way the ze Luis guy from Porto no to him as well too old to come to the premiership rather have Bobby back.

In addition to Benteke, we are also being linked to a loan for some Portuguese league nonentity, Ze Luis, who hails from that footballing powerhouse the Cape Verde islands, whilst Chelsea are being linked to Isco from Real Madrid.

It appears ENIC have no shame in sullying the reality of our elevated financial status, but are still scavenging in the Ryan Nelson/Luis Saha bargain barrel, whilst our alleged financial inferiors, Chelsea, still conduct themselves like a genuinely ambitious football club.

It’s a strange one as he has some good atributes and a few years ago was a feared CF who bullied CBs. If it was a choice between him or Llorente, I’d go for him as he’s younger, more mobile and more physical.

I notice he still plays for Belgium (ranked # 1 in the world) and has a good scoring record for them. If we can swap KWP and get him in then fair enough.

My own preference would be the Kosovan CF, who I think has a bit about him.

Save some big bucks for a DM and CB – Soumare and Koubily!
